as a Citrix-Powered On-Demand Enterprise

Citrix Systems Citrix Systems' (NASDAQ: CTXS) is an American technology company, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with subsidiary operations in California and Massachusetts, with additional development centers in Australia, India and the UK. , Inc. (Nasdaq:CTXS CTXS Citrix Systems (NASDAQ stock ticker symbol) ), the global leader in access infrastructure solutions, today announced that Engen, a large petroleum refining and marketing company in Johannesburg, South Africa South Africa, Afrikaans Suid-Afrika, officially Republic of South Africa, republic (2005 est. pop. 44,344,000), 471,442 sq mi (1,221,037 sq km), S Africa. , recently completed an SAP upgrade for several hundred users in more than 100 locations using Citrix(R) MetaFrame XP(TM) Presentation Server.

"The upgrade to SAP R/3 from SAP R/2 could not have been done as quickly without Citrix access infrastructure," said Andries van der Vyver, eBusiness manager at Engen. "It would have taken weeks to roll out the new SAP GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  to all our depots. Using Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, it literally took us only hours.

"With Citrix access infrastructure for the on-demand enterprise, updates to client code are performed centrally on the server, reducing the impact on users and IT staff when new applications are deployed. New applications can be quickly replicated to multiple servers and then made available to users in minutes, leading to near-immediate access and productivity."

Engen began a major technology refresh recently, moving from a mainframe environment to an open systems environment standardized on Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 2000 Servers. Engen's aim was to put an infrastructure in place that would allow its remote locations to access SAP, Microsoft Outlook For the e-mail and news client bundled with certain versions of Microsoft Windows, see .

and other business applications. Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, the world's most widely deployed presentation server, is now a key component of that infrastructure. The foundation of the Citrix MetaFrame(R) Access Suite, MetaFrame XP Presentation Server centralizes heterogeneous applications and information, enabling IT administrators to deliver, manage, monitor and measure computing resources on demand and provide easy, secure and instant access from any client device across any network connection.

Engen has implemented eight servers - six in Cape Town Cape Town or Capetown, city (1991 pop. 854,616), legislative capital of South Africa and capital of Western Cape, a port on the Atlantic Ocean.  command center from which these distributed servers can be more efficiently and cost-effectively managed. Centralized management and support are vital to Engen's aim of reducing deployment the lagtime of upgrades and new applications.

"Manageability was a key issue for us. We needed to be able to easily manage and support our users, and roll out new or updated applications more quickly," said van der Vyver. "In addition to the speed of an on-demand enterprise, Engen also wanted to achieve the cost-savings typical of the on-demand enterprise because of more efficient management of IT resources. "The support costs for our remote sites are approximately one third using Citrix MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, when compared to what it would have cost to maintain and support a user in a normal PC environment," concluded van der Vyver.
