It is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.  and related events in Washington D.C.

More than 140,000 visitors, including many elderly veterans, attended the World War II Memorial events. This kept the local Red Cross office busy, with staff members and volunteers staging water and first-aid supplies out of R.F.K. stadium and other sites to event locations during the weekend, providing medical treatment for visitors, and joining in other volunteer activities.

In addition to honoring the 16 million Americans who served in the U.S. armed forces during World War II, the Memorial Day ceremonies commemorated the sacrifice and heroism of millions more who contributed at home and traveled overseas to provide comfort, relief and aid to those in need. The American Red Cross has developed a special exhibit titled, "Volunteering for Victory," to educate the public about the unique and vital role that volunteers, donors and supporters of the organization played during the Second World War. The exhibit will be featured throughout the summer both at the Red Cross Museum in Washington, D.C., and through the virtual museum at www.redcross.org/museum.

The solution is part of a larger mobility trial being deployed by Zumasys for the Red Cross in both Washington D.C. and San Diego, Calif. to assist with day-to-day activities and emergency response. Zumasys provided PC5220 3G Wireless WAN PC Cards manufactured by Sierra Wireless for the Red Cross to use with its existing implementation of Citrix(R) MetaFrame(R) Presentation Server, enabling secure access from its laptops to applications via Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service. Based on third-generation (3G), wide-area CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band. 2000(R) 1xEV-DO technology, Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess allows customers who are out of the office to access information at speeds of 300 to 500 kilobits per second (unit) kilobits per second - (kbps, kb/s) A unit of data rate where 1 kb/s = 1000 bits per second. This contrasts with units of storage where 1 Kb = 1024 bits (note upper case K). , faster than those offered by any other commercially available wide-area wireless data service in the United States.

By using this mobile access solution, Red Cross staff and volunteers were able to wirelessly access Microsoft(R) Outlook for e-mail, the Red Cross' CHERS CHERS Chapter Environment Resource System (American Red Cross)  database of disaster victims, a Web-based expense card activation application for providing assistance to victims, and additional information housed in a FrontRange Solutions GoldMine(R) database. On-demand access to information led to better coordination of volunteers and supplies throughout the weekend. In addition, by enabling staff and volunteers to access and update data from the field, the joint mobile access solution accelerated emergency response time to spectators in need.

"This was an event of national significance, so it was critical that our staff had fast, wireless access to information from a number of different sites," said Jim Kiker, director of Information Technology for the American Red Cross of the National Capital Area. "With Zumasys' support, a mobile access solution from Citrix, Sierra Wireless, and Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess, we were able to communicate via e-mail in the field, access our critical databases wirelessly and support more than 100,000 participants and visitors with thousands of supplies. As the Chapter IT director in support of communications at an event of this magnitude, it was comforting to know that -- at all times -- our Mass Care and Disaster Services officers had the information they needed at their fingertips "Fingertips" is a 1963 number-one hit single recorded live by "Little" Stevie Wonder for Motown's Tamla label. Wonder's first hit single, "Fingertips" was the first live, non-studio recording to reach number-one on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in the United States. ."
