Citizens of Florida Keys Come to Aid of Disaster Victims.

KEY WEST, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 2001

Citizens of the Florida Keys Florida Keys, chain of coral and limestone islands and reefs, c.150 mi (240 km) long, extending from Virginia Key, S of Miami Beach, to Key West, and forming the southern extremity of Florida.  & Key West are joining together to donate their time, money and blood to disaster relief efforts in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

 and Washington, D.C., following Tuesday's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

Scheduled to begin in Florida City at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, the Key West Poker Run A Poker run (also known as a Poker Derby) is an organized event using a motorcycle, boat, car or other form of transportation where participants travel over a predesignated route and, at designated stops on the route, draw playing card(s).  is to feature some 16,000 motorcycles and riders who plan to traverse the Overseas Highway between Miami and Key West. The event, according to organizer Mike Horne, plans to donate 100 percent of their registration fees.

U.S. flags are to be issued from Horne's Motorcycle Specialties for a donation.

"I recalled after Hurricane Georges, the American Red Cross American Red Cross: see Red Cross.  was very helpful to Key West," he said. "Some of the people who were at the World Trade Center probably sent the Red Cross money to help us.

"So we are collecting monetary donations for the American Red Cross," Babb said.

Thus far, Babb has raised $2,000 and hopes to amass $10,000 by next Friday. Donation jars sit at both properties, and he's urging other businesses to make donations as is the Key West Business Guild.

Key West fire and police units are to lead a flag promenade at 5 p.m. Saturday on Duval Street, starting at Front and Duval.
