Citizens Advisers Releases Top Ten Corporate Citizens List.


PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -- Socially responsible investing Socially responsible investing describes an investment strategy which combines the intentions to maximize both financial return and social good. In general, socially responsible investors favor corporate practices which are environmentally responsible, support workplace diversity,  firm names environmentally progressive companies

Today Citizens Advisers announced this year's Top Ten Corporate Citizens in Environmental Stewardship. The list is drawn from the Citizens Index, a broad-based index Broad-Based Index

An index designed to reflect the movement of the entire market. The smallest broad-based index is the Dow Jones Industrial Average with 30 industrial stocks, and the largest is the Russell 300 Index.
 of 300 companies that have passed multiple screens for financial strength and corporate responsibility.

"We were impressed by the range of environmental initiatives taken by this year's winners," said Citizens Advisers President Sophia Collier. "Environmental stewardship is not only the right thing to do, these companies know it's good for business. Hopefully their progressive and effective actions will inspire others to follow their lead."

To provide a broad perspective, Citizens selected one representative from each sector it uses to classify investments:

Consumer discretionary: Home Depot, Inc. (HD)

Consumer staples Consumer Staples

The industries that manufacture and sell food/beverages, tobacco, prescription drugs, and household products.

Notes:
Proctor and Gamble would be considered a consumer staple company because many of its products are household and food related.

Energy: BP Plc (BP)

Financials: Citigroup Inc. (C)

Information technology: Motorola Corp. (MOT)

Materials: Sonoco (SON)

Telecommunications services: Sprint Corp. (FON Fon

People of southern Benin and adjacent parts of Togo. They speak a dialect of Gbe, a Kwa language of the Niger-Congo language family. Numbering about 3 million, the Fon are mainly farmers.
