Citigroup donates $1.5M to support Green enterprise.


The Citigroup Foundation has presented $1.5 million to Enterprise in support of Green Communities, a $555 million national initiative with the Natural Resources Defense Council The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a New York City-based, non-profit non-partisan international environmental advocacy group, with offices in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Beijing. Founded in 1970, NRDC today has 1.  to build 8,500 green affordable homes that promote health, conserve energy and natural resources and provide easy access to jobs, schools and services.

Immediately following the announcement, participants toured the construction site for Lower East Side People's Mutual Housing Association's Diversity Houses, a Green Communities development that received $8.5 million in tax credit equity from Enterprise. Diversity Houses' green attributes will include proximity to employment, schools, retail and public transportation; healthy, environmentally responsive construction materials and energy efficient appliances and lighting.

, provides financing to help small for-profit entrepreneurs renovate occupied affordable buildings.

The majority of the funding from the Citigroup Foundation is being used to provide grants to community-based developers of affordable housing that want to go green. To be eligible for a grant, developers agree to use the Green Communities criteria, created by Enterprise and NRDC NRDC Natural Resources Defense Council

 with experts in many fields to provide practical, cost-effective cost-effective,

Diversity Houses' 44 affordable one-, two- and three-bedroom family apartments are being constructed on two formerly vacant city-owned lots on East 2nd and East 3rd Streets. The two seven-story buildings will include commercial space, laundry Laundry can be:
