Citigroup Commemorates Retirement of Former Chairman and Co-CEO John S. Reed With $2.5 Million Grant to CERGE-EI Foundation.

: C) today announced it will make a gift of $2.5 million to CERGE-EI (Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education - Economics Institute) Foundation, USA, to support the first American-style economics program leading to a Ph.D. degree in Central and Eastern Europe The term "Central and Eastern Europe" came into wide spread use, replacing "Eastern bloc", to describe former Communist countries in Europe, after the collapse of the Iron Curtain in 1989/90.  and the former Soviet Union. The gift commemorates the achievements of Citigroup's former Chairman and Co-CEO, John S. Reed For other persons of the same name, see John Reed.

John Shepard Reed (born 1939) is the former Chairman of the New York Stock Exchange. He previously served as Chairman and CEO of Citicorp, Citibank, and post-merger, Citigroup.
, who retired from Citigroup after a 35-year career at the company this past April and serves on CERGE-EI Foundation's Board of Directors. The grant, which will be made in the form of a Citigroup Foundation grant and distributed over a multi-year period, will endow professorships and student fellowships at CERGE-EI.

CERGE-EI's Ph.D. program is complemented by world-class economics research primarily focused on issues related to the ongoing economic transition of the region. The 120 students enrolled in the program are chosen from throughout Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Selection is based on academic merit without regard to a student's financial means. CERGE-EI's faculty includes graduates of Princeton, University of Chicago, University of Chicago, University of, at Chicago; coeducational; inc. 1890, opened 1892 primarily through the gifts of John D. Currently a candidate for U.S. accreditation, CERGE-EI has been recognized for excellence in Ph.D. studies in economics by both the European Union's PHARE/ACE and USAID USAID United States Agency for International Development
