Citicorp Structures Cross-Border Leveraged Lease For Tranz Rail; SSB, Citicorp Help New Zealand's Largest Rail Company Finance New Acquisition.


NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 1998--Citicorp Global Equipment Finance Group today announced the closing of a $55 million Cross-Border US Leveraged Lease for Tranz Rail Tranz Rail, formally Tranz Rail Holdings Limited, was the the main rail operator in New Zealand from 1995 until it was purchased by Toll Holdings in 2003. Formation  Holdings Limited, the largest rail passenger and freight haulage company in New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The deal, a landmark lease transaction for one of New Zealand's largest public companies, represents another successful collaboration of Citigroup's Citicorp and Salomon Smith Barney Smith Barney is a division of Citigroup Global Capital Markets Inc., a global, full-service financial firm, that provides brokerage, investment banking and asset management services to corporations, governments and individuals around the world. .

The leveraged lease, as structured by Citicorp, allowed Tranz Rail to finance the acquisition of a new rail, vehicle and passenger ferry, the "ARATERE", at a cost significantly lower than that of an outright debt financing Debt Financing
