The new molding line initially will be a pilot line. Further expansion will be required once it reaches capacity. Cost of the pilot line is $1.5 million.

The expansion will begin in April and is expected to be complete and operating in December 1996. Vulcan Engineering Co. of Birmingham is supplying the equipment and engineering the project.

The new line will be able to produce larger castings than the current production line. The project was necessitated by the award of a contract from Jost International of Germany to produce ductile iron Ductile iron, also called ductile cast iron or nodular cast iron, is a type of cast iron invented in 1943 by Keith Millis[1]. While most varieties of cast iron are brittle, ductile iron is much more ductile, as the name implies.  fifth wheels for tractor/trailers.

The foam casting process is a different method of producing castings than conventional sand molding. In the foam or lost foam process, a replica of the casting is produced in polystyrene.

The individual foams or patterns are attached to a foam tree which ducts molten metal to the pattern and are dipped in a ceramic slurry, which is dried. Dry sand is, then, compacted about the pattern in a metal flask. When molten metal is introduced, it causes the foam pattern to evaporate e·vap·o·rate
