Citadel Technology Launches First-of-Kind Desktop Windows Security Suite.

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 5, 1998--Citadel Technology, Inc. (NASD OTCBB: CITN) today announced the general availability of Windows Security Suite, a set of utilities that protect the configuration of Windows desktops and provide ongoing security of data as it is created.

Unique Combination of Desktop and Data Security Protects Against Unauthorized Use, Accidental Desktop Problems, and Data Theft

With Windows Security Suite, a LAN administrator, small business owner, or parent can determine user privileges for desktop access and modification, and individual users can password-protect folders, encrypt folders and files, and permanently delete folder and file contents. As a result, PCs are thoroughly protected from unauthorized access, "down time" from user-induced desktop problems, and data theft.

Windows Security Suite Components

Windows Security Suite combines two products: WinShield, Citadel's award-winning desktop management and security utility, and FolderBolt, its new companion for file and folder security.

WinShield is used to assign desktop privileges to individual users or to entire groups, with profiles that are invoked when a user logs on, at a standalone PC or from a network console. Each WinShield profile determines what applications can be accessed at the desktop, the extent to which a user can modify system settings and desktop appearance, which specific CD-ROMs and network drives the user can access, and where the user can save or open files. To safeguard against security workarounds, WinShield can also restrict the user's DOS and Explorer access.

FolderBolt completes the PC security scenario by providing individual users with the ability to lock-up folders at shut-down, and automatically unbolt them with startup password entry, keeping their contents secure from unauthorized access. FolderBolt can also encrypt files and folders with any of five encryption standards including DES, prepare password-protected files for e-mail and, acting as an electronic paper shredder, securely delete files to an absolutely unrecoverable state. Administrative override disks can be created to unlock bolting or encryption when necessary, as when a password is forgotten.

Windows Security Suite in the Office

The WinShield/FolderBolt combination provides extensive desktop and data security for individual departments or an entire organization, with ample flexibility to suit specific business needs. For example, an administrator can use it to lock-in desktops to eliminate problems due to operator error or experimentation, and specify that file-save operations occur on network drives that are routinely backed up. Employees in such departments as human resources, finance, legal and R&D can then protect files they know to be sensitive. The ability to control access to the desktop helps to enforce corporate PC policies and reduce support costs that stem from configuration problems, and the ability to control data access protects confidential information even if a PC or notebook is stolen.

Windows Security Suite in the Home

Windows Security Suite also benefits the home computing environment, particularly when a PC is shared among family members. The most knowledgeable user can set up the system to keep less skilled users from accidentally experimenting themselves into desktop trouble, and each family member can have folders that are inaccessible by others. Children are kept from Quicken financial data, legal documents, home office information, and other confidential items, but can be given the right to maintain confidential homework files and diaries -- with the head of the house able to unlock protected areas if a password is lost or if the need arises to review a child's files. Because each family member who logs on sees only the files, folders, and applications that are appropriate for access, it's much like having multiple PCs in the home at far less expense.

Windows Security Suite, which operates under Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT, is available immediately through selected resellers and integrators. The single-user version, with an estimated street price of $99, is being introduced with a limited-time estimated price of $49.
