Cisco Demonstrations at Booth No. 3121

Cisco showcases innovative, new IP Next Generation Network (IP NGN) technologies and solutions that allow cable operators to create new services, generate revenue, and reduce capital and operating expenses. Demonstrations include:

IP NGN Service Convergence Layer (Service Exchange Framework)

Demo #1. Differentiated Voice Services: Demonstration shows (a) Caller Identification (ID) on a TV via a set-top box and (b) Session Initiation Protocol (protocol) Session Initiation Protocol - (SIP) A very simple text-based application-layer control protocol. It creates, modifies, and terminates sessions with one or more participants. Such sessions include Internet telephony and multimedia conferences.

It is described in RFC 2543.
 (SIP) video telephony services including the Linksys SPA9000 Internet Protocol Private Branch Exchange (IP-PBX) system for business services. An integrated home solution is also demonstrated -- with television (TV) equipped with a Scientific Atlanta Set-Top Box and voice over broadband -- thereby enhancing usability and convenience over a single customer interface.

Demo #2. Fixed Mobile Convergence Seamless switching between cellular and local networks for mobile users. The goal is to have a handset that switches automatically from the cellular network to the local, wireless Wi-Fi network when entering a building in order to save cellphone minutes.  (FMC See fixed mobile convergence. ): Demonstration shows seamless call handover between a Global System for Mobile Communications (communications) Global System for Mobile Communications - (GSM, originally "Groupe de travail Sp?ciale pour les services Mobiles") One of the major standards for digital cellular communications, in use in over 60 countries and serving over one billion subscribers.  (GSM) and a Wireless-Fidelity (Wi-Fi) network using a dual-mode smart phone. The Cisco FMC feature enables broadband customers to use their own dual-mode cell phones to make Voice over IP (VoIP) phone calls over Wi-Fi when at home or at a Wi-Fi "Hotspot," or over a cellular network when out of Wi-Fi network -- increasing Average Revenue per User (ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) A calculation often used to determine the overall value of an application. It is also used to rate particular customers, especially in the wireless space, by comparing someone's account to the overall average. ) and reducing capital expenditures (CAPEX).

Demo #3. Cisco Dynamic Flow Control: Demonstration shows how the cable operators can dynamically detect application types and set Quality of Service (QoS). Specifically, customers can be assigned QoS profiles so that they can surf the Web, download content, and stream video without being impacted by peer-to-peer (P2P See peer-to-peer and point-to-point. ) traffic -- thus ensuring an enhanced user experience for revenue-generating services and reducing customer churn.

Demo #4. Cisco Content Delivery Network Solution: Demonstration shows two video screens -- one QoS enabled and one not. Cisco's content delivery networking technology signals QoS via PacketCable Multimedia (PCMM PCMM People Capability Maturity Model

), thereby enabling cable operators to offer new IP-based services and long-tail content while simultaneously providing an enhanced, entertainment-grade experience.

Joining Cisco in this demonstration are the following companies and their products:

--Camiant, Inc., a provider of policy control solutions for the delivery of IP-based multimedia applications, and their PCMM policy server; and

--Cauldron Solutions, LLC, a provider of technology solutions that manage the production, distribution and transaction exchange of digital media content across platforms for leading media players, and their Entitlement Platform.

IP NGN Network Convergence Layer

Demo #1. Wideband for Cisco uBR1002 Universal Broadband Router: Demonstration shows a Linksys wideband cable modem receiving multiple downstream radio frequency (RF) channels from a Cisco(R) uBR10012 Universal Broadband Router. Multiple High-Definition TV (HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates ) channels shown on multiple personal computer (PC) screens demonstrate bandwidth far over 38.8 Mbps. Cisco's wideband solution can provide speeds up to about 1 Gbps. Wideband enables MSOs to offer high bandwidth service tiers and as well as new revenue-generating Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (communications, networking) Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification - (DOCSIS) ITU-approved interface requirements for cable modems involved in high-speed data distribution over a cable television network.  (DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) A cable modem standard from the CableLabs research consortium (www.cablelabs.com), which provides equipment certification for interoperability. )-based services.

Demo #2. Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6): Demonstration shows a multiple IPv6 enabled applications, including IPv6 PC applications and video to an IPv6 enabled set-top box. Because IPv6 supports a much larger address space than IPv4, it allows MSOs to scale their networks -- a must-have due to rapid growth in both the number of set-top boxes the MSOs must support and the number of IP addressable client devices, such as mobile phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) that customers want to connect."

Demo #3. IP over DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

 (ONS and CRS-1): Demonstration shows how IP over Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing See WDM.  (DWDM), implemented on the Cisco CRS-1 and Optical Networking System (ONS) platforms, serve to increase service flexibility while reducing operational expenses (OPEX See CAPEX. ) and capital expenses (CAPEX) -- through advanced DWDM features that transparently converges the IP/MultiProtocol Label Switching (MPLS) and the DWDM layers to increase efficiencies, increase reliability, and speed service deployments even as traffic growth occurs. The Cisco CRS-1 and ONS platforms also form the backbone of the Cisco booth.

Broadband Access Management and Customer Advocacy

Demo #1. Cisco Broadband Access Management: Demonstration shows the Cisco Broadband Access Center and the Cisco Network Registrar, management products that reduce OPEX and helps enable faster activation of "triple play" services. Products, management and services are all key parts of the Cisco end-to-end solutions.
