time for deployed installations, because the equipment and software called for in the contract are similar to the Cisco products used at fixed-base installations.

The selection of equipment suppliers is part of the multimillion dollar contract Motorola received from the U.S. Air Force in February 1996 for a new advanced rapid deployment communications network. If the Air Force chooses to exercise all options, the multiyear contract could exceed $263 million. Cisco's value could possibly exceed $10M over the life of the contract.

In the initial phases of the contract, Cisco will supply Motorola with the Cisco 3100, an Ethernet workgroup switch that provides high-end features, including multilayer capabilities, and the Cisco 2511, Cisco 2524, and the Cisco 4500 routing platforms for test and evaluation purposes.

Theater Deployable Communications (TDC) is a state-of-the art ground-to-ground communications infrastructure designed to replace older, existing systems. The TDC system can transmit and receive voice, data, and video communications securely to or from wireless, satellite, or hard-wired sources. The system is both mobile and modular, allowing the Air Force the flexibility to not only tailor the system to meet their specific needs, but also to transport the system anywhere in the world for military contingencies, while drastically reducing the problems associated with airlift and manpower.

According to Mark Fried, Vice President and Director of Communications Director of Communications is a position in the private and public sectors. The Director of Communications is responsible for managing and directing an organization's internal and external communications.  Systems Operations, "This contract is a very strategic win for Motorola that falls well within our core competencies."

"Cisco is delighted to play an expanding role in delivering state-of-the-art communication to the Air Force warfighter," says Roman Matijkiw, regional manager for Cisco's federal operations.

Delivery of the first system to the Air Force is expected to occur before February 1998.
