Cisco marks foray into network management arena with partnership, standards initiative, new products.SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 9, 1995--Cisco Systems has launched its Network Aware network management initiative with four key announcements: a reseller partnership with NETSYS Technologies, Inc.; a program to establish a standard method of collecting information from disparate network devices; and the introduction of two new versions of its CiscoWorks suite of management applications. Cisco and NETSYS have signed a worldwide licensing agreement calling for Cisco to resell the entire NETSYS Enterprise/Solver* family of simulation-based network planning and problem solving software products. Cisco has launched the Common Internetworking Topology Initiative (CITI CITI Columbia Institute for Tele-Information (Columbia University) CITI Center for Information Technology Integration (University of Michigan) CITI Collaborative IRB Training Initiative ) to develop a standard format for gathering and communicating configuration data from different networked devices. In the past, conflicting collection and reporting formats have made it difficult to generate complete, accurate topology representations. The proposed standard will be submitted to the Internet Engineering Task Force (c/o Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI), Reston, VA, www.ietf.org) Founded in 1986, the IETF is a non-membership, open, voluntary standards organization dedicated to identifying problems and opportunities in IP data networks and proposing technical solutions to the in early 1995. Firms that have agreed to participate include Accugraph, Cabletron, Chipcom, ISICAD, Ki Networks, Optical Data Systems, SunSoft and Remedy Corp. The new CiscoConnect capability, available with CiscoWorks 3.0 in second quarter 1995, creates an Internet link enabling CIO to gather problem data direct from the user's network. In addition, CiscoWorks, originally developed for UNIX systems, is available on personal computers for the first time. CiscoWorks for Windows, a set of Windows-based applications that runs on the HP OpenView network management platform, is a specially selected and priced subset of the original version.
