Cisco announces single box hub router solution for LAN, WAN and Internet connectivity; integrated router hub products, based on industry leading Cisco 2500 series, lead industry in providing single-box solution featuring high-hub port density.

SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States
San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 12, 1995--Cisco Systems Inc., the leading global supplier of internetworking solutions, today introduced two new high-end router/hubs -- the 2518 and 2519 -- in its Cisco 2500 series Cisco 2500 series routers
The Cisco 2500 series of routers are a series of 19" rack mount access routers typically used to connect ethernet or token ring networks via ISDN or leased serial connections (ie. Frame Relay, T1 etc).
that integrate the functions of a 23-port intelligent local-area network (LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. ) concentrator with a remote office router in a single box.

These routers are an ideal solution for connecting local devices in a branch or remote office to a local-area network (LAN), to a wide-area network (WAN) or to the Internet. Cisco today also announced the upgrade of its Cisco Hub/Ring Manager for Windows with these new models.

As a result of this announcement, companies can easily extend their IS infrastructure to branch and remote offices. Some businesses may use these new 2500 series products as their primary workgroup LAN concentrator and rely on a Cisco 2518 or 2519 router/hub to deliver a cost-effective, integrated method for providing WAN connectivity.

These new products are an extension of Cisco's existing router/hub product line and feature all of the functionality of the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (Cisco IOS) software, including complete scalability.

"With these two new products, we're able to offer a unique solution that provides remote management, lowers operational costs and accommodates future growth -- all in a single box," said Kevin Kennedy division director in the company's Access Business Unit. "Cisco's integrated router/hub solution is also easier to install, manage, service and support than two separate units.

Cisco has also incorporated a management interface bus between the router and hub processors, which maximizes the independence of the router and hub functions to provide a level of reliability and robustness that can't be achieved through the traditional use of stand-alone routers and hubs. This is another step forward in Cisco's promise to provide end-to-end access solutions."

Unique Connectivity, High-Port Density

The Cisco 2518 and Cisco 2519 router/hubs unite Cisco IOS software routing technology with intelligent hub media technology from LanOptics Ltd. of Israel. These units are the latest products of a 1993 agreement between Cisco and LanOptics.

The products incorporate a remote office router with two high-speed synchronous serial wide-area network (WAN) ports to easily satisfy increased bandwidth requirements. Each router also features a Basic Rate Interface (BRI See ISDN.

Cisco's two new 2500 series router/hubs also consolidate IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  legacy LAN and WAN traffic by supporting widely used IBM SDLC (Synchronous Data Link Control) The primary data link protocol used in IBM's SNA networks.  protocols on either or both synchronous router ports. These router/hubs are a perfect solution for sites transitioning from traditional 3270/SNA terminals to a distributed client/server computing environment.

Companies can eliminate duplicate WAN lines and expenses, since these router/hubs allow a single WAN to carry SNA (Systems Network Architecture) IBM's mainframe network standards introduced in 1974. Originally a centralized architecture with a host computer controlling many terminals, enhancements, such as APPN and APPC (LU 6.  and IP network traffic.

Cisco's new Cisco 2518 and Cisco 2519 router/hubs offer users expansion capability. Both products support connectivity to industry standard, third-party LAN hubs as well as units available from Cisco's development partner, LANOptics. The Ethernet hub capability of the Cisco 2518 incorporates an Attachment Unit Interface See AUI.

) port and the Token Ring hub capability of the Cisco 2519 provides an industry standard Ring-In/Ring-Out (RI/RO) port.

The Cisco Hub/Ring Manager for Windows provides users with a sophisticated graphical network management capability, including configuration, access control and monitoring, through a set of add-in modules for the industry leading Hewlett-Packard (HP) OpenView for Windows Network Node Manager.

Version II of the manager supports higher hub port density and also supports Ethernet LAN media management. The Cisco Hub/Ring Manager for Windows runs on any 486-based IBM PC or compatible workstation and is a natural companion to the new Cisco 2518 and Cisco 2519 hub/routers.

Lower Recurring Costs

These new router/hubs feature all of the Cisco IOS software's WAN optimization features, decreasing operating costs. Remote locations that require only occasional access to network services can rely on Cisco's dial-on-demand routing (DDR (Double Data Rate) Refers to an SDRAM memory chip that increases performance by doubling the effective data rate of the frontside bus. For more details, see SDRAM.

) to provide WAN ISDN or serial dial-up connectivity only when necessary rather than using expensive leased lines.

In addition, snapshot routing and IPX/SPX See IPX.  spoofing keep router and server state information on both sides of the WAN connection to reduce additional traffic.

The Cisco 2518 and Cisco 2519 router/hubs also increase application availability and bring forward a consistent level of service. Priority output queuing, for instance, enables network administrators to prioritize traffic, while custom queuing ensures that mission-critical traffic receives a guaranteed minimum amount of bandwidth.

Pricing and Availability

The Cisco 2518 will list at $4,595 (U.S.), while the Cisco 2519 will list at $5,995 (U.S.). Each router supports nine Cisco IOS software feature set combinations. Version II of the Cisco Hub/Ring Manager for Windows will list at $995 (U.S.). Shipments will begin in January, 1996.
