Together, the companies will enhance the functionality of Cisco IOS Cisco IOS (originally Internetwork Operating System) is the software used on the vast majority of Cisco Systems routers and all current Cisco network switches. IOS is a package of routing, switching, internetworking and telecommunications functions tightly integrated with a 1 software to provide end users with secure, direct access to DB2 databases via their Cisco routers, providing a high-speed platform for the data center. Cisco will become the first vendor to provide this functionality on a router using industry standards.

Cisco and StarQuest will incorporate the functionality of StarQuest's software, StarPipes, into Cisco IOS software. StarPipes, which implements IBM's Distributed Relational Database Architecture (DRDA (Distributed Relational Database Architecture) An IBM architecture for distributing data across multiple heterogeneous platforms. It also serves as a protocol for access to these databases from IBM and non-IBM platforms. DRDA uses LU 6.2 as its transport protocol. ) Level 3, provides a direct connection from desktops to IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  DB2 databases using TCP/IP TCP/IP

With the explosive growth of corporate intranets, enterprise networks are quickly migrating to TCP/IP. Cisco and StarQuest's solution will preserve a corporation's investment in the data center by giving TCP/IP-based local-area networks (LANs) access to data on SNA-oriented hosts. The product will support any DRDA-enabled database and client software, including the StarSQL Pro ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network.  driver from StarQuest.

"Maintaining access to the data center is a key requirement for enterprises that are migrating to corporate intranets," said Selby Wellman, senior vice president and general manager for Cisco's InterWorks Business Unit. "Our joint development with StarQuest is one more example of Cisco's plan to provide leading, end-to-end solutions for our data center customers. This remote access solution has become a key component of our intranet strategy."

Field Trial of Software Reduces Expenses and Increases Productivity

Kaiser Permanente Information Technology Services recently evaluated a pilot solution from Cisco and StarQuest to provide access from the desktop to DB2. Kaiser Permanente's main goal was to streamline access to data in the data center for end users who need information to make critical decisions.

With this solution, Kaiser Permanente eliminated the cost of purchasing, deploying and maintaining several servers and software for accessing the mainframe through the LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. .

Kaiser Permanente studies show that the pilot solution offered database access that is 30 to 40 percent faster than alternative solutions. Cisco and StarQuest's pilot solution was also scalable, showing almost no performance degradation when comparing transaction processing speeds for 500 concurrent sessions to those attained for a single session.

"Together with StarQuest, Cisco has turned its router into a fully integrated database access platform that allows desktop users running TCP/IP and ODBC from anywhere on the enterprise to have full access to DB2," said Manny Manny may refer to:

Cisco and StarQuest will make a formal product announcement in approximately 60 days. This product will be used in conjunction with the Cisco 7500 family of routers.

"Designers of advanced client/server and intranet applications benefit from the Cisco/StarQuest collaboration," said Paul Rampel, president of StarQuest. "This solution encourages the deployment of desktop applications that require the highest level of responsiveness and availability that Cisco-based networks and IBM's DB2 have come to represent to commercial users. It will allow network planners to decouple the decision to move to TCP/IP as the enterprise network standard while preserving the advantages of native SNA (Systems Network Architecture) IBM's mainframe network standards introduced in 1974. Originally a centralized architecture with a host computer controlling many terminals, enhancements, such as APPN and APPC (LU 6.  access on the IBM hosts."
