Winners were named in eight categories, including Best of Show and Best European Product/Service, and were chosen from over 100 entries. Cisco Systems walked away with Best of Show for its 7500 Router. The 7500 delivers three times the performance of Cisco's current platform and opens a migration path to switched LANs. It's also one of the first products on the market to implement the "route server" architecture that many believe will dominate by the end of the century. Philips Communication Systems/TRT was named Best European Product/Service for its ATM Node 10000 multimedia switch and its MPEG/2 ATM module. Working in tandem, the switch and module deliver the very-high-quality video compression needed for videoconferencing and multimedia applications. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges from Data Communications International. According to executive editor Lee Keough: "We were very impressed with the number and quality of truly innovative networking products. Over half our finalists were European companies. To me, this proves that networking innovation is flourishing in Europe and that the networking industry is truly global."
