Cisco Systems Provides Affordable Ethernet Switching Solutions for Small- to Medium-Sized Businesses; Cisco EtherSwitch 1220 and 1420 delivers configuration-flexibility for easy migration.SAN JOSE San Jose, city, United States San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 28, 1996--Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the Cisco EtherSwitch 1220 and EtherSwitch 1420 series of affordable, configuration-flexible workgroup Ethernet switches. The EtherSwitch products are part of Cisco's NetBeyond extended network system, which increases LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. performance and seamlessly integrates LANs with remote sites and the Internet. These new products enable users to take advantage of high-speed backbones and reduce server bottlenecks, without requiring changes in user's current network cabling infrastructure or 10BaseT desktop systems. The EtherSwitch products are available in fixed and modular configurations with 100BaseT and FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. uplinks and support for 24 switched 10BaseT ports. All switches incorporate Cisco IOS Cisco IOS (originally Internetwork Operating System) is the software used on the vast majority of Cisco Systems routers and all current Cisco network switches. IOS is a package of routing, switching, internetworking and telecommunications functions tightly integrated with a (TM) technologies to ensure interoperability across the extended network and centralized management. Enhanced multimedia support through the standards-based Cisco Group Multicast Protocol (CGMP) enables the switches to forward routed IP multicast A one-to-many transmission of data over an IP network. It is used for a myriad of purposes including updating routers, announcing and discovering services and streaming media. IP multicast saves network bandwidth, because packets are transmitted as one stream over the backbone and only traffic selectively to targeted multimedia end stations, improving data throughput and reducing overall network traffic. "These new EtherSwitch products are designed to meet the demands of small- to medium-sized businesses that are price-sensitive, but require flexible solutions that allow them to migrate and grow their networks to take advantage of high-speed technologies, without sacrificing previous investments," said Bill Rossi, senior product line manager for Cisco's Small Internetworks Business Unit. Configuration options and features The EtherSwitch series consists of four individual switches and a line of high-speed plug-in modules. The EtherSwitch 1220, a fixed-configuration switch, is available in two models. Each offers 24 switched 10BaseT ports and is available with two 100BaseTX ports or a combination of one 100BaseTX and one 100BaseFX port. The modular EtherSwitch 1420 is also available in two models, of 2K or 8K MAC addresses, with 24 switched Ethernet An Ethernet network that is controlled by a switch instead of a shared hub. The switch cross connects all clients, servers and network devices, giving each sending-receiving pair the full rated transmission speed. ports and two high-speed expansion slots. The expansion slots support 100BaseTX and 100BaseFX single-port and multiport repeater A hub in a 10Base-T network is often known as a multiport repeater, because it sends any input signal to all outputs. See 10Base-T. modules or FDDI modules. The EtherSwitch series' support of 1K-8K MAC addresses allows users to connect directly to desktops or 10BaseT hubs for LAN segmentation, providing added flexibility and investment protection. All models support four RMON (Remote MONitoring) Enhancements to the management information base (MIB) structure used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP). In 1991, RMON added comprehensive network monitoring capabilities. groups for enhanced manageability, network monitoring and traffic analysis. Additionally, the products include a Switch Probe Analyzer (SPAN) port, allowing users to connect a network analyzer or an external RMON probe for support of all nine RMON groups. Port-configurable intraswitch virtual LANs (vLANs) provide broadcast traffic control, firewall protection and simplified moves, adds and changes. Pricing and availability The Cisco EtherSwitch 1220 and EtherSwitch 1420 series will be available in November and distributed through CiscoPro(TM) resellers worldwide. Estimated street pricing starts at $129 per port. FDDI and 100BaseT modules for the EtherSwitch 1420 are currently available.
