Psionic Software develops network security software designed to increase the efficiency of intrusion detection systems (IDS) by reducing false alarms. The acquisition of Psionic Software augments Cisco's network security portfolio, which consists of VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.  firewall, IDS, and SSL-accelerators. Cisco's security solutions are offered through specialized security appliances as well as Cisco IOS Cisco IOS (originally Internetwork Operating System) is the software used on the vast majority of Cisco Systems routers and all current Cisco network switches. IOS is a package of routing, switching, internetworking and telecommunications functions tightly integrated with a  routers, switches, and security and identity management applications.
