Cisco Systems Announces New Low-Cost Ethernet Switching Solution; New lower density Catalyst 1900 Series switch offers high performance for smaller workgroups and businesses.

, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 3, 1997--Cisco Systems, Inc. today announced the expansion of the Catalyst 1900 series of Ethernet workgroup switches with the introduction of the Catalyst 1912.

The new, low-priced, low-density Ethernet switch A device that connects clients and servers to each other in an Ethernet network. See switched Ethernet.  delivers Cisco's industry-leading Ethernet switching technology to smaller workgroups with high-performance LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  requirements.

The Catalyst 1912 is the latest addition to the NetBeyond extended network system of modular, stackable LAN and WAN products. NetBeyond is the ideal networking foundation for the small and medium-sized business and branch offices of larger enterprises. The NetBeyond system currently includes Cisco's 3600 series of high-performance access routers; the FastHub 300 series of 100BaseT hubs; and the Catalyst 1900 and 2820 series of Ethernet switches.

One of three products in the Catalyst 1900 Series, the Catalyst 1912 is the first switch designed by Cisco to meet the needs of smaller workgroups with lower switching port density requirements. The new fixed-configuration switch enables users to take advantage of high-speed applications and reduce server bottlenecks at a lower entry price than competitive products.

With 12 10BaseT ports and 1 AUI (Attachment Unit Interface) The network interface used with the original Ethernet. See 10Base5.

port, each delivering 10-Mbps of bandwidth, and one 100BaseT port for high-speed server or backbone connectivity, the Catalyst 1912 is a high-performance upgrade to shared media 10BaseT LANs. The Catalyst 1912 can store 1024 Media Access Control (MAC) addresses allowing users to connect directly to desktops or 10BaseT hubs for LAN segmentation, providing added flexibility and investment protection.

"The Catalyst 1912 makes it easy and very cost-effective for smaller businesses to increase network performance to individual users and workgroups," said Steve Troyer, product manager for Cisco's Small Internetworks Business Unit. "This new product is based on Cisco's award-winning Ethernet switching technology which currently has more than one million installed ports worldwide.

"At such a low entry-price, the Catalyst 1912 is a natural solution for cost-conscious customers looking to support an increasing number of users and bandwidth-intensive applications."

Additional Benefits and Features

The Catalyst 1912 incorporates features of the Cisco IOS Cisco IOS (originally Internetwork Operating System) is the software used on the vast majority of Cisco Systems routers and all current Cisco network switches. IOS is a package of routing, switching, internetworking and telecommunications functions tightly integrated with a (TM) software platform, which delivers network services and enables networked applications. Cisco IOS software ensures interoperability and centralized management across the NetBeyond extended network system. With support for CiscoWorks(TM) Windows, an SNMP-based management software application, customers can easily configure, monitor and troubleshoot their entire network from a central location.

The Catalyst 1912 also supports embedded Remote Monitoring (protocol) remote monitoring - (RMON) A network management protocol that allows network information to be gathered at a single computer. Whereas SNMP gathers network data from a single type of Management Information Base (MIB), RMON 1 defines nine additional MIBs that provide a  (RMON (Remote MONitoring) Enhancements to the management information base (MIB) structure used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP). In 1991, RMON added comprehensive network monitoring capabilities. ), easing traffic analysis and network monitoring The term network monitoring describes the use of a system that constantly monitors a computer network for slow or failing systems and that notifies the network administrator in case of outages via email, pager or other alarms.  and enabling network managers to identify heavy users. Additionally, the product includes a Switch Probe Analyzer (SPAN) port, enabling users to connect a network analyzer A specialized hardware device or software in a desktop or laptop computer that captures packets transmitted in a network for routine inspection and problem detection. Also called a "sniffer," "packet sniffer," "packet analyzer," "traffic analyzer" and "protocol analyzer," the network  or an external RMON probe A network device that analyzes RMON information. The probe can monitor traffic and set an alarm when a certain condition occurs. It can be used to periodically audit traffic as well as gather statistics that are sent to the management console.  to monitor traffic from any port.

The Catalyst 1912 supports Cisco's Group Management Protocol (CGMP), a component of Cisco IOS software, to provide enhanced multimedia support and enable the switch to forward routed IP multicast traffic selectively to targeted multimedia end stations. This unique feature improves data throughput and reduces overall network traffic. Port-configurable intraswitch virtual LANs (vLANs) also provide broadcast traffic control, firewall protection and simplified adds and changes.

"With the Catalyst 1912, Cisco has delivered an affordable switch that increased the performance of our network and strongly positioned us for new applications and growth," said Scott Blundell, information systems manager for Forke Brothers, a Lincoln, Nebraska-based international auction house. "Cisco has clearly set a new price/performance standard in this market segment."

Pricing and Availability

The Catalyst 1912 is available in March and distributed through Cisco's resellers worldwide. US list price for the 14-port switch is $2,495.
