Storage Partners' recommendations, we chose FastStor, ADIC's seven-tape DLT storage device, which has proven to be solid and reliable."

The FastStor units are being used with different backup software applications to provide a sophisticated automated backup scheme. Cisco uses FastStor and Seagate Software's Backup Exec's Low Administration Function to automate daily, weekly and monthly backups. They added additional security by implementing off-site storage for weekly and monthly backup tapes. Using HP Openview and enterprise software agents, Cisco can automatically back up remote sites from a central location.

"Not only can we determine whether a remote site has been backed up, but we can also initiate remote backup from our central site. Now we can be certain that whatever the circumstances, we have backed up all 30 remote offices. This would not be possible without reliable automation and the right software solution at each remote site," says Mr. Gerritsen.

FastStor's small size greatly facilitated its deployment to Cisco's remote offices. "The unit can fit virtually anywhere, which is important when you are trying to standardize backup at 30 very different sites. In most cases, the FastStor is simply installed on the server that it is backing up," says Gerritsen.

FastStor's user-friendly features, including simple push-button (electronics) push-button - A roughly fingertip-sized plastic cover attached to a spring-loaded, normally-open switch, which, when pressed, closes the switch. Typical examples are the keys on a computer or calculator keyboard and mouse buttons.  controls and status LCDs, also facilitated installation and training for Cisco. Gerritsen points out that "before adopting a standardized hardware solution, it is necessary to insure that both training and field operation will be painless. With FastStor, setup was simple and the personnel quickly learned how to operate the storage device."

Cisco's switch to automated remote backup will result in reduced administrative costs administrative costs,
n.pl the overhead expenses incurred in the operation of a dental benefits program, excluding costs of dental services provided.
. "Beyond the fact that FastStor's seven cartridge DLT system is competitively priced, we will also see productivity gains from automating our backup. Our MIS staff will spend less time doing manual backup and more time managing the IT structure," states Gerritsen.

Cisco, one of the most recognized names in computer networking, has 13,000 employees working in more than 200 sales and support offices in 54 different countries. They specialize in providing expertise in network design and end-to-end networking solutions.
