The CiscoPro CPA753 also supports analog home or office phone lines and allows users to connect their computer, telephone, fax, modem or answering machine to a single device.

The CiscoPro CPA753 is the first product resulting from Cisco's recent acquisition of Combinet, a leading supplier of ISDN connectivity solutions (see editor's note).

This new telecommuting telecommuting, an arrangement by which people work at home using a computer and telephone, transmitting work material to a business office by means of a modem and telephone lines; it is also known as telework.  solution is also part of the recently announced CiscoPro product family, intended for use in popular business applications such as telecommuting, Internet access, small- and home-office connectivity, distributed databases and high-speed document transfer.

CiscoPro products will be sold through a two-tier distribution channel to businesses, institutions and individuals for use in branch offices, medium- to small-sized businesses and professional offices.

"The CiscoPro CPA753 rounds out our access product family and affirms our commitment to bringing access solutions to the small-office and telecommuting market segment," said Don Listwin, general manager, access business unit, Cisco Systems.

"It provides an integrated, easy-to-use and inexpensive solution for users who demand the ability to connect to their organizations from remote sites."

Prior to the availability of solutions like the CiscoPro CPA753, users had to purchase an ISDN telephone and additional hardware to achieve an integrated voice and data desktop.

Voice and data communications are managed transparently, enabling the CiscoPro CPA753 to provide telecommuters access to the same resources and information that reside on their corporate network. The CiscoPro CPA753 supports Macintosh, DOS/Windows- or UNIX-based workstations.

Extensive Feature Set

The CiscoPro CPA753's robust set of features makes it easy to set up, administer and manage. The analog interface allows a standard analog telephone modem or facsimile machine to share an ISDN line, thereby reducing costs by eliminating the need for special equipment in telephone and a second analog line.

In addition, the CiscoPro CPA753 offers the benefits of IP and IPX (Internetwork Packet EXchange) The network layer protocol in the NetWare operating system. Similar to the IP layer in TCP/IP, it contains a network address and allows messages to be routed to a different network or subnet.  routing, concurrent bridging, multi-link Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using ), SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  management and multi-level security in a modem-sized package.

Included with the CiscoPro CPA753 is Cisco Connect!, a Windows-based installation and configuration software tool that offers users a graphical interface to view the status of their remote systems. Cisco Connect! also provides a series of interview dialogues with a context-sensitive help screen for initial configuration.

The CPA753 includes an Ethernet port for LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  data, an S/T S/T Such That

port for ISDN telephones and an analog port for use with analog telephone, faxes and modems. It also provides 4:1 compression, enabling file transfers at speeds up to 512 kbps. Additionally, a built-in NT1 interface minimizes installation and support costs by removing the need for a separate terminal adapter or power supply.

Pricing and Availability

The CiscoPro CPA753 is available in two configurations: the CiscoPro CPA753 model, which supports up to four users; and the CPA753-RO model, which supports an unrestricted number of users. The anticipated selling price(a) for these models is $1,200 and $1,500 respectively. Both products will be available mid-October 1995 through the CiscoPro two-tier distribution channel.
