Demonstrating the numerous consumer benefits of networked digital entertainment, Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS), a leading semiconductor supplier of digital entertainment solutions, and Oregan Networks Ltd., a leading provider of middleware solutions for delivering interactive services to digital entertainment devices, have collaborated to demonstrate advanced media and interactive services on next-generation Enhanced DVD players and other digital home entertainment devices, including wireless audio/video clients and multimedia home gateways.

Cirrus and Oregan are demonstrating a network-enabled Enhanced DVD system based on the Cirrus CS98200 family of chipsets combined with Oregan's embedded browser and IP-TV middleware. Working together, the two companies demonstrate the ability for devices to stream MPEG-format audiovisual content over any wired or wireless IP network, as well as playing regular movies from DVD, utilizing the Universal Plug 'n' Play (UPnP) industry standard.

UPnP enables fully automatic discovery of content and services on any UPnP-enabled device within a home network. Regardless of whether the content is stored on an UPnP-enabled PC, PVR or MP3 player, the technology permits remote access, presentation and control of that content from any other UPnP-supported device within the home.

The networked Enhanced DVD platform will allow consumers to use their television to view photos and movie videos stored on their PC, or play MP3 files through DVD-Audio systems. All content is discovered automatically and offered through a series of intuitive menus on the TV, without the need to interact directly with the PC.

The Oregan IP-TV middleware also allows access to the G-cluster game system, to enable streaming of video games over an IP network. This server-centric gaming system brings existing PC video games to CS98200-based DVD players, set-top boxes and other thin clients. Games are executed on a server, with the audiovisuals transmitted to the DVD player in MPEG format over the network and game control commands being returned to the server, all in real-time. The Enhanced DVD player effectively becomes a powerful on-demand games console.
