Cirrus Logic Launches New Digital Audio Receiver and Transmitter Products Ready for DVD-Audio.Business Editors & High-Tech Writers LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 4, 2002 Audio Engineering Society Show - October 4, 2002 - Cirrus Logic, Inc. (Nasdaq:CRUS), today introduced two new digital audio interface products for the professional and consumer audio markets. The CS8416 192kHz digital audio receiver and the CS8406 192kHz digital audio transmitter provide manufacturers with the capability to support 192kHz and DVD-Audio features. The new products will be demonstrated at the Audio Engineering Society Show in Los Angeles from October 5-8, 2002. These devices enable consumer and professional audio products to exchange 192kHz SPDIF See S/PDIF. and AES/EBU (Audio Engineering Society/European Broadcasting Union) A professional serial interface for transferring digital audio from CD and DVD players to amplifiers and TVs. AES/EBU is typically used to transmit PCM and Dolby Digital 5. audio data. The CS8416 is the industry-leading 192kHz digital audio receiver with extremely low jitter A flicker or fluctuation in a transmission signal or display image. The term is used in several ways, but it always refers to some offset of time and space from the norm. For example, in a network transmission, jitter would be a bit arriving either ahead or behind a standard clock cycle performance of 200ps. Target applications for both products include Audio Video receivers (AVRs) and DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc. DVD in full digital video disc or digital versatile disc Type of optical disc. The DVD represents the second generation of compact-disc (CD) technology. Receivers with DVD-Audio capability, DVD recorder systems, personal video recorders (PVRs), multi-media speakers, digital mixing consoles and automotive audio systems. According to Terry Leeder, vice president of sales and marketing for Cirrus Logic, the two Total-E(TM) products work together to help manufacturers enhance audio performance for rapidly emerging DVD-Audio products. "The CS8416 and CS8406 build on Cirrus' Audio IC leadership to provide optimal digital solutions for a new generation of audio technologies." The CS8416 receives and decodes digital audio data with sample rates up to 192kHz and utilizes a very low jitter clock recovery mechanism to yield a clean recovered clock from the incoming audio stream. An 8:2 input multiplexer allows for up to eight digital audio input sources and the second output of the multiplexer provides a SPDIF pass-through feature for added system flexibility. The CS8416 integrates auto-detection of compressed audio input streams and CD-Q sub-code decode and also allows for selectable signal routing to three General Purpose Output (GPO) pins. The CS8406 digital audio transmitter accepts and encodes audio and digital data, which is then multiplexed, encoded and driven onto a cable/optical transmission interface. The device also has a flexible three-wire serial digital audio input port and on-chip channel status, plus user bit buffer memories that allow block-sized updates without the need for external memory. In addition, the CS8406 includes an on-chip low-skew, low-impedance, differential line driver that allows the user to drive longer cable lengths. The CS8406 is also pin compatible with the CS8405A 96kHz digital audio transmitter. Both the CS8416 and CS8406 are fully compatible with EIAJ EIAJ Electronic Industries Association of Japan EIAJ Electronic Industry Association of Japan CP1201, IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission, Geneva, Switzerland, www.iec.ch) An organization that sets international electrical and electronics standards founded in 1906. It is made up of national committees from over 60 countries. IEC - International Electrotechnical Commission 60958, SPDIF and AES3 standards. Both digital audio interface products operate from a 3.3V power supply, support a direct interface to logic levels from 3.3V to 5.0V, and allow for stand-alone operation in systems with no micro-controller. Pricing and Availability The CS8416 and CS8406 are currently sampling and priced at $2.56 and $1.99 respectively for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and quantities of 10,000. Both devices are available in 28-pin SOIC (Small Outline IC) A small-dimension, plastic, rectangular, surface mount chip package that uses gull-wing pins extending outward.
