) today announced it has achieved the number one position in supplying the primary audio DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  chip for seven out of 10 leading brands of A/V receivers through its Crystal(R) branded DSP audio decoders.

Cirrus Logic is in a strong position for continued growth in this market as the explosive growth in DVD-based home entertainment systems pull sales of multi-channel digital A/V receivers. Consumer demand has made the DVD player the fastest growing consumer product ever, with about half of DVD player purchases including an A/V receiver.

Forward Concepts, an independent research firm in Tempe, Ariz., predicts AV receiver sales will grow from 4.8 million units this year to 28.8 million units in 2004.

"With its market specific processor audio DSPs and factory developed firmwares, Cirrus Logic has succeeded in becoming the market share leader in A/V receiver decoder chips," said Will Strauss, president of Forward Concepts. "Their focused efforts for the past three years have resulted in the adoption of the Crystal branded DSP audio decoders by most tier one OEMs."

By using programmable DSPs, millions of Crystal equipped A/V receivers support playback from DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

The primary key to Cirrus Logic's success has been using programmable DSPs to provide a variable platform supporting the multitude of DSP algorithms utilized in digital audio such as: Dolby Digital, MP3, DTS (1) (Digital Theatre Sound) A digital audio encoding system used in movie and home theaters. Popularized by the movie Jurassic Park, the six-channel (5. , Musicam, MPEG-2 Multi-channel, AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) An audio compression technology that is part of the MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 standards. AAC, especially MPEG-4 AAC, provides greater compression and better sound quality than MP3, which also came out of the MPEG standard. , THX A design system that provides realistic sound playback for movie and home theater from THX, Ltd., San Rafael, CA (www.thx.com), an independent spin-off from Lucasfilm, Ltd. The THX Sound System was developed during the production of the Return of the Jedi in 1982 and named after George  and HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital) A digital processing technique that increases fidelity on audio CDs, developed by Keith Johnson and Michael "Pflash" Pflaumer. .

Additionally, all of these algorithms have already been programmed directly by Cirrus Logic engineers allowing them to focus their research and development efforts on new technologies required for tomorrow.

By anticipating the explosive DVD digital audio market and investing in it early, Cirrus Logic today enjoys close strategic relationships with most tier one consumer electronic companies and is helping them craft the right strategies to remain leaders in their markets.

"Cirrus Logic is now expanding and further stratifying our leadership position with larger systems-on-chip (SOCs), higher performance DSPs and lower cost devices already in development," said Terry Ritchie, vice president of DSP Technologies for Cirrus Logic's Consumer Products Division. "Relative to strong consumer demand for home entertainment systems, we see not only the A/V receiver market but the entire multimedia digital house as a significant growth opportunity going forward."

Today, Crystal branded DSPs and data converters, and Maverick branded Internet processors offer a complete catalog of multimedia integrated circuits. Combining the Crystal DSPs, factory developed firmwares and the Crystal digital to analog and analog to digital converters, Cirrus Logic offers a single source solution for architecture and design of Internet age consumer audio entertainment equipment.
