Cirrus Logic Announces 32-Bit DSP with Integrated Premium Audio Converters.

Patented Technology Allows CS47048 to Achieve Best-in-Class Performance, Features in a Single IC for Automotive Amplifier Applications

DETROIT -- Cirrus Logic Inc. (Nasdaq: CRUS crus (krus) pl. cru´ra   [L.]

) has introduced the industry's highest-performance audio system-on-a-chip (SOC), the CS47048, targeting audio amplifier applications. By combining an advanced 32-bit audio DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive , high performance multichannel Using two or more paths for transmission or processing. It can refer to a variety of architectures including (1) multiple I/O channels between the CPU and peripheral devices, (2) multiple wires in a cable, (3) multiple "logical" channels within a single wire or fiber or (4) multiple  audio codec and a digital audio receiver/transmitter into a single IC, the CS47048 dramatically reduces overall board space requirements and system cost.

The CS47048 features an advanced, 32-bit single core audio processor with powerful customer programming tools and multibit Delta-Sigma audio converter technology, both of which provide best in class performance. This integration allows audio amplifier designers to greatly simplify designs by reducing the number of ICs required to implement an automotive amplifier by as many as 10, depending on channel count and signal processing requirements. This chip reduction, which includes A/D converters, D/A converters, DSP, memory, and SPDIF See S/PDIF.  I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

, dramatically reduces the board space required and system cost.

"With the CS47048, we've packed a high performance audio DSP and audio converters onto the same piece of silicon and supported it with our easy to use DSP Composer programming environment," said Jason Rhode, president and chief executive officer, Cirrus Logic. "It's a strong technological achievement, and it allows designers to reduce component count and more easily achieve their system requirements without sacrificing audio quality."

Cirrus Logic's patented and patent-pending technology on the CS47048 allows the mixed-signal audio converters to be co-located on the same silicon as the high-speed DSP while maintaining premium analog performance. This patented technology features new continuous time architectures, which improves the isolation between the converters and DSP and allows for the high-performance capability of the DSP with negligible impact to the converter performance.  available in the market today. Taking into account the convergence of digital media in automotive audio systems, including media players, radio, Bluetooth and navigation devices, the integrated sample rate converters simplify the management of audio sources at any sample rate up to 192 kHz. These digital audio sources can be accommodated through either the on-chip 192 kHz S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital InterFace) A serial interface for transferring digital audio from CD and DVD players to amplifiers and TVs. S/PDIF is typically used to transmit PCM and Dolby Digital 5.1, but is not tied to any sampling rate or audio standard.  receiver and transmitter or the standard serial audio ports.

Whereas some audio system-on-a-chip solutions offer limited 24-bit or 28-bit DSP solutions, the CS47048 features a potent 32-bit, audio-optimized fixed-point DSP operating at 150 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  with greater on-chip memory than competitive solutions. With this greater signal processing capacity, the CS47048 supports more channels, higher sample rates and processing chains. Customer programming is simplified through DSP Composer([TM]) software, a powerful graphical programming tool that offers a wide array of audio drag-and-drop building blocks in which customers can easily adjust filters, delay, bass boost, graphic/parametric EQ and many other audio parameters. Cirrus Logic also provides numerous standard third-party audio algorithms from leading companies such as Dolby, DTS (1) (Digital Theatre Sound) A digital audio encoding system used in movie and home theaters. Popularized by the movie Jurassic Park, the six-channel (5. , SRS Labs and THX A design system that provides realistic sound playback for movie and home theater from THX, Ltd., San Rafael, CA (www.thx.com), an independent spin-off from Lucasfilm, Ltd. The THX Sound System was developed during the production of the Return of the Jedi in 1982 and named after George . The CS47048 is also software upgradeable, ensuring readiness for future audio features.
