Audio Processors, BandXpandeR Firmware Improves Frequency Harmonics Lost During Audio Compression Encoding digital audio data to take up less storage space and transmission bandwidth. Audio compression typically uses lossy methods, which eliminate bits that are not restored at the other end. ADPCM and MP3 are examples of audio compression methods. ) has introduced BandXpandeR[TM] (BXR BXR Bilateral Exchange Rate ) firmware, a feature for its line of audio processors that restores much of the lost audio quality during the compression of MP3 audio content or other low-quality recordings.

Through an innovative adaptive algorithm An adaptive algorithm is an algorithm which changes its behavior based on the resources available. For example, stable partition, using no additional memory is O(n lg n) but given O(n) memory, it can be O(n) in time. , BandXpandeR[TM] software regenerates missing high frequency harmonics which can be lost during recording, compression or transmission. When high frequency harmonics are reintroduced, the audio bandwidth of the signal is extended, and brightness, presence and clarity are restored. For example, for the average audio MP3 file that is ripped at around 128 kbps, BandXpandeR firmware can greatly improve audio quality by generating a high-frequency audio signal that is harmonically related to the existing audio signal. Compressed audio content, such as MP3 files, has become ubiquitous with consumers worldwide, yet when listened to outside of their standard headphone See headphones.  or earbud environment, the sound quality is less than stellar. BandXpandeR technology eliminates this problem, allowing consumers to enjoy a higher-quality listening experience of their lower-quality recorded content from their audio/video receivers, docking stations, automotive sound systems or multimedia speakers.

The software is available through Cirrus Logic's CS485XX, CS4953XX and CS497XX family of audio processors.

"Cirrus Logic BandXpandeR technology is a very compelling new feature for CE manufacturers to differentiate their products by giving consumers the ability to perk up the sound quality from their portable compressed content," said Terry Ritchie, DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  marketing director, Cirrus Logic. "It's yet another addition to Cirrus Logic's growing library of royalty free audio features whereby OEMs can provide market leading capabilities while sustaining a cost effective edge in the market."

Cirrus Logic Inc.

Cirrus Logic develops high-precision, analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits A mixed-signal integrated circuit combines analog circuits with digital signal processing (DSP) circuits on a single semiconductor die. An integrated circuit that includes both analog and digital circuitry (but no DSP), like a 555 timer, is generally not considered a mixed-signal  for a broad range of consumer and industrial markets. Building on its diverse analog mixed-signal patent portfolio, Cirrus Logic delivers highly optimized products for consumer and commercial audio, automotive entertainment and industrial and aerospace applications. The company operates from headquarters in Austin, Texas, with offices in Tucson, Ariz., Europe, Japan and Asia. More information about Cirrus Logic is available at www.cirrus.com.
