AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 11, 2000

Maverick Internet Technology Delivers Advanced Processing and Security

Features for One of the First Mass-Market PC Appliances

Cirrus Logic Inc.(Nasdaq:CRUS), the market leader in audio chips worldwide, today announced that its Maverick(TM) system-on-chip (SOC) Internet audio solution will be featured in the new Turtle Beach(TM) AudioTron(TM) Internet audio appliance being featured at this week's E3 conference in Los Angeles in Turtle Beach's booth, number 6415.

The AudioTron device, which was recently highlighted by Bill Gates in his keynote presentation at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference The Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) is the annual software developer-oriented trade show and business conference where Microsoft elaborates on its hardware plans for Microsoft Windows-compatible PCs.  (WinHEC), incorporates home networking technology to remotely play digital music stored on a user's personal computer, as well as audio originating from the Internet. For instance, an AudioTron in the living room can play Microsoft's Windows Media Audio See Windows Media formats.  (WMA (Windows Media Audio) An audio compression method from Microsoft. Known originally as MSAudio, this proprietary format competes with the MP3 and AAC methods. WMA encodes rapidly and is known to be especially effective at low bit rates. ) and MP3 files saved on a PC located in another part of the house. AudioTron is expected to ship this fall for the U.S. and Canadian holiday buying season.

"We are excited to be working with Cirrus Logic to help broaden the scope of how consumers interact with the Internet through entertainment devices."

AudioTron consists of four components -- the PC song capture and management software (Voyetra(R)'s AudioStation(R) 4.0), an HPNA-compliant phone networking card, the AudioTron base unit, and a remote control. Since the digital files are transmitted over home phone wires using the HPNA See HomePNA.  2.0 standard, and decompressed on the fly by the base unit (up to a CD-like sample quality of 48KHz), users will experience no interference with normal phone calls or DSL DSL

"The strength of our Maverick solution is that it is form factor independent and capable of powering a wide range of Internet devices, from portable audio players to complicated home stereo systems," says Matthew Perry, vice president and general manager of Cirrus Logic's Embedded Processors Division. "The selection of our Maverick processor by Turtle Beach reinforces our position as the optimal solution for Internet audio devices."

The Maverick processor provides high-quality audio decoding for the most popular Internet audio coding standards. With the Maverick processors' ability to decode not only MP3, but also Windows Media Audio and other popular decoding standards, the AudioTron device will be capable of handling any audio compression format demanded by the market. The Maverick processor can be quickly modified to support other audio compression standards (codecs) as they emerge, or add valuable features such as equalization In communications, techniques used to reduce distortion and compensate for signal loss (attenuation) over long distances.  without redesigning the players.

As an off-the-shelf market-specific processor (MSP (1) (Management Service Provider or Managed Service Provider) An organization that manages a customer's computer systems and networks which are either located on the customer's premises or at a third-party datacenter. ), the Maverick processor features a programmable ARM(R) processor core that allows not only decoding of audio in real time but also provides the ability to run multiple popular operating systems. The AudioTron, which uses Microsoft's WindowsCE, provides consumers with out of the box connectivity to manage and transfer files from their PC.

The Maverick solution is also capable of addressing the digital rights management concerns that have fueled the music content providers' recent concerns over companies like Napster and MP3.com. The Maverick processor is the first chip to support both the Windows(R) Media Format and InterTrust(R) digital rights management solutions for securing digital rights for artists and music content providers.
