Circuit Assembly Corp., CA, Develops New ATAS Interconnect for UltraATA & UltraDMA Applications.

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 6, 1997--In response to the challenge of providing the PC industry with a faster, more reliable and cost effective interface connector, CA has developed a revoluntionary interconnect that provides protection against signal crosstalk in UltraATA/UltraDMA applications.  design is breakthrough technology for the storage device industry and we are excited about the potential impact this technology will have on the entire PC market" said Ian Morrell, Director of Design Development at CA.

Objective tests indicate that the 80 conductor configuration of the ATAS connector outperforms the 40 conductor configuration when running UltraDMA at 33 MB/s. READ/WRITE speeds are significantly enhanced by 95% and 56%, respectively. The innovative design of ATAS, which is supported by the SFF (Small Form Factor) Refers to a device that is smaller than others in its field. For example, a miniature display on a cellphone is an SFF device because displays can be extremely large on monitors and TVs by comparison. See form factor.  and X3T13 Standards Groups, boasts improved signal to noise ratio at transfer speeds of 33MB/s and higher by implementing an 80 conductor configuration with interposing ground lines between existing 40 pin IDE signals.

The ATAS interconnect, configured as a cable mount connector, easily implements this configuration totally inside the form factor of the existing 40 pin IDE connectors, eliminating the need for special tooling or additional assembly time. The superior design of these connectors allows for backwards compatibility backwards compatibility - backward compatibility  and heightens system performance over existing IDE connectors via a proprietary method of connecting the 80 conductor .025" pitch ribbon cable A thin, flat, multiconductor cable that is widely used for internal peripheral connections in electronic systems. In a PC, a 34-wire ribbon connects the floppy drive (if present) to the motherboard.  to an internal ground bus bar within the connector body. The internal ground bus bar achieves a low impedance level by reducing noise at high transmission speeds through seven IDE grounds that are tied to the interposing grounds, forming one superground bus.

The ATAS interconnect will be competitively priced and carried as a stock item by CA. Production of the CA-ATAS Series began in August 1997.
