Circon announces introduction of VaporTrode electrode.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 9, 1995--Richard A. Auhll, chairman and president of Circon Corp. (NASDAQ/NMS:CCON CCON Call Control ), Monday announced that the company expects to begin selling its VaporTrode electrode in early 1995.

Concurrently, Circon will also introduce its new Rotating Continuous Flow Resectoscope resectoscope /re·sec·to·scope/ (-sek´to-skop) an instrument with a wide-angle telescope and an electrically activated wire loop for transurethral removal or biopsy of lesions of the bladder, prostate, or urethra.  System which is ideally suited for the VaporTrode electrode.

The VaporTrode electrode can be used to perform a variety of surgical procedures in the urinary tract including vaporization vaporization, change of a liquid or solid substance to a gas or vapor. There is fundamentally no difference between the terms gas and vapor, but gas is used commonly to describe a substance that appears in the gaseous state under standard conditions of  and coagulation coagulation (kōăg'ylā`shən), the collecting into a mass of minute particles of a solid dispersed throughout a liquid (a sol), usually followed by the precipitation or  of prostate and bladder tissue as an alternative modality to a transurethral resection of the prostate Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)
Surgical removal of a portion of the prostate through the urethra, a method of treating the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, whether from BPH or cancer.

Market acceptance studies demonstrate that the use of the VaporTrode electrode dramatically reduces bleeding, shortens hospital stay by 80 percent and lowers the overall cost of surgery and hospitalization by approximately 60 percent, or $5,000.

The single-use VaporTrode electrode will sell for approximately $150. About 300,000 urological procedures could potentially be performed annually with the VaporTrode electrode. The VaporTrode electrode is an innovative design that vaporizes rather than cuts urological tissue.

It also induces substantially deeper coagulation, thereby eliminating most of the bleeding that causes the patient to wear a catheter and remain in the hospital for about four days. Circon has patents pending and a pending trademark application.

The Rotating Continuous Flow Resectoscope System can be used in several hundred thousand urological and gynecological gynecological /gy·ne·co·log·i·cal/ (-kah-loj´i-k'l) gynecologic.  procedures annually. In this product only the operating tip rotates which reduces the trauma caused by rotating the entire shaft in conventional instruments. The system sells for approximately $8,000. Patent and trademark applications are pending.

Circon has the largest share of the U.S. urological endoscope endoscope, any instrument used to look inside the body. Usually consisting of a fiber-optic tube attached to a viewing device, endoscopes are used to explore and biopsy such areas as the colon and the bronchi of the lungs.  market which is an important advantage when introducing new technologies and products. The VaporTrode electrode can only be used with Circon Resectoscopes and the company may be able to penetrate competitive accounts.

Urologists find the VaporTrode electrode easy to use and much less expensive than laser systems. VaporTrode electrode sales to existing customers could replace sales of certain existing products such as the lower-cost traditional cutting loops and higher-cost laser fibers.

Circon develops, manufactures, and markets advanced endoscope and video systems for minimally invasive surgical applications. Circon is the largest U.S. producer of medical endoscope and video systems.
