Circle/Alcatel USA Wins 1999 "Partnership of the Year" Award from American Society of Transportation and Logistics.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 1999--

Industry Group Honors Shipper/carrier Team as Example of

Cooperative Achievement in Professional Logistics Practice

The American Society of Transportation and Logistics, Inc.(R) (AST&L) has selected Alcatel USA and its logistics team, including Circle International, for the 1999 AST&L "Partnership Award" recognizing significant achievements in cooperative logistics The logistic support provided a foreign government or agency through its participation in the US Department of Defense logistic system, with reimbursement to the United States for support provided.  practice.

The selection followed a rigorous evaluation process in which the organization considered a dozen partnership candidates, as nominated by manufacturing and industrial firms. The goal of the award is to promote awareness and understanding of principles of professional logistics practice to drive improved supply chain management.

"This award demonstrates the results that can be achieved when a manufacturer and its logistics providers break down the traditional adversarial walls between shipper and supplier, and embrace true principles of logistics value," said Ron Reedick, chairman of AST&L's award selection committee, and the organization's past national chairman. "It is a testament to the teamwork, professional respect, and commitment to shared goals that are the foundation of any successful partnership."

In addition to Circle, which as global logistics supplier for Alcatel USA provides international transportation and customs brokerage, the Alcatel USA logistics team included McCollister's Transportation Systems, a domestic transportation firm specializing in high-value products; and Pegasus TransAir, a worldwide freight forwarder An individual who, as a regular business, assembles and combines small shipments into one lot and takes the responsibility for the transportation of such property from the place of receipt to the place of destination.  providing customized domestic delivery services. The award is conferred upon a partnership involving two or more organizations working together to improve logistics processes in a unique manner.

"This award is about how today's modern logistics partnerships can deliver tangible benefits," said David I David I, king of Scotland

"We are pleased to be recognized for our role on this team and honored to be part of the Alcatel USA logistics success story."

In its approach to logistics outsourcing, Alcatel USA built a unique team to meet the challenge of its marketplace, noted Dennis Stanley, director, logistics for Alcatel USA. Its strategy drew upon a core group of in-house professionals, and then leveraged those technical and management capabilities with the resources and expertise of three logistics suppliers, each offering a different complementary discipline. The philosophy emphasized gaining efficiencies throughout the logistics process while streamlining and strengthening its programs through extensive participation of its suppliers in planning, process development, implementation, benchmarking and continuous improvement.

"Our goal was to integrate the team into a common environment in which we were completely focused and contributing to clearly defined goals," said Stanley. "What we discovered were many opportunities to work together and build a solid partnership that delivered a much stronger logistics solution. We share in the success and our customers benefit from our ability to leverage the skills and expertise of our partners to bring about change and improvements we could not have achieved on our own."

Through the partnership, Alcatel created a more efficient supply chain, reduced administrative burden and provided improved delivery to its customers. Importantly, the company achieved better information flow and visibility of Alcatel USA products as they progressed through the various transportation and distribution channels from supplier to plant to market, noted Stanley.
