Under the agreement -- the first commercial UMTS deployment for Lucent in North America -- Lucent will provide Cingular with a wide array of products spanning the breadth of its portfolio, including Bell Labs-developed wireless and data networking equipment, as well as network management and applications software. Among the products to be supplied are Lucent's Flexent(R) OneBTS(R) base stations (Node Bs), which support HSDPA and will be broadly deployed across Cingular's network.

Lucent's UMTS equipment - which supports HSDPA with a software-only upgrade - will be deployed in both the 1900 and 850 Megahertz One million cycles per second. See MHz.

"We are excited about the opportunity to work with Cingular as they deliver the benefits of mobile broadband services to consumers and businesses throughout the country," said Cindy Christy, president of Lucent's Mobility Solutions Group. "Following the deployment, Cingular is expected to have one of the world's largest, most sophisticated UMTS networks, and will be able to offer a wide variety of lifestyle enhancing, multimedia services to their customers."

As part of the agreement, Cingular will participate in the Lucent Market Advantage Program (MAP), an initiative which helps service providers generate demand from their business and consumer customers for new service offerings.

"The Lucent Market Advantage Program offers a comprehensive set of support tools, information and consulting services including market data, sales training and co-marketing plans that will help Cingular Wireless accelerate revenue, differentiate and enhance their offers, and ultimately deploy services more quickly across its new 3G network," said Vince Molinaro, president of North America sales for Lucent Technologies. "We are not only supplying Cingular with a world-class network, but partnering with them to successfully bring new services to market."
