According to UPSIDE, the list, which will be published in the magazine's June 2001 issue, "is composed of red-hot companies that we think are going to continue to sizzle over the next year, and far beyond."

UPSIDE reported that nearly 800 companies were nominated for the Hot 100 list. The magazine worked with a panel of judges and industry experts including financial analysts, venture capitalists, and researchers to select the final 100.
