Churchill takes time to break through.

PREP SOCCER

It took more than 60 minutes to score, but that was all part of the plan for the Churchill boys soccer team.

Churchill, which prides itself on conditioning, outlasted Willamette to win 2-0 on Tuesday at Churchill High School in the Midwestern League opener for both teams.

them by a mile," Churchill sophomore Spencer Treffry said. "The coaches ran us a lot during (daily) doubles and it paid off."

Treffry, who returned after a three-week absence because of a quadriceps quadriceps /quad·ri·ceps/ (kwod´ri-seps) having four heads.

"I saw him wind up to punch it and I just waited for it," Treffry said. "Right place, right time."

Treffry loaded up and nailed a line drive into the net near the bottom of the right goalpost.

Five minutes later, Treffry served a corner kick to T.J. Prentice, who headed it in for the second goal.

"T.J. subbed in right before that play. I pointed at him the entire way out so he was looking at me," Treffry said. "I (kicked) the ball, and it just happened to be perfect. He went in for it and put it in the goal. It was money."

Churchill outshot Willamette 15-9, but it was the Wolverines who nearly scored first. Timothy Anthony had a breakaway down the left side of the field in the 26th minute. As he shot toward the right goalpost, Churchill goalkeeper Kyle Novak dived to his left and deflected de·flect

"I always tell the kids, `The ball never gets tired,' ' he said. In the long run that is going to benefit us, and near the end of the game we got our goals because we wore them down I think with the possession."
