James A. Pervier, who has been active in the fundraising drive.

As of last night, $663,350 had been pledged, bringing the parish more than halfway to its $1.3 million goal.

The money is needed to pay for roof, masonry and gutter work that has been completed and to upgrade the bathrooms, kitchen and classroom areas of the lower hall in the Rosary church building. An elevator will also be installed to make the building more accessible to handicapped people.

Preliminary work has started and St. Mary's Church will soon be demolished. Monsignor Thomas Sullivan of the Diocese of Worcester The Diocese of Worcester is a shared name for several ecclesiastical territories, or dioceses, of Christianity:
  • Anglican Diocese of Worcester, named for Worcester in England
  • Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester, named for Worcester County in Massachusetts

The diocese covers the county of Worcestershire, the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley, and parts of the City of Wolverhampton. , had offered to pay about $201,000 to take down the building, which has been closed since January 2006 when bricks fell from the facade of the building.

Since then, during a series of meetings, the parish's members decided to focus on repairing the Rosary church and agreed to undertake the fundraising effort. In the past two weeks, a mass mailing has gone out to those associated with the parish. Corporate sponsors have been sought and some telephone solicitations have begun.

Mr. Pervier said those who donate to the United Way can call that agency and ask to have their donations earmarked for the parish since it is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Nonprofit Organization

Organizers of the fundraising drive are hoping to meet their goal quickly and said the drive, called "Honoring the past, preparing for our future," should be a success.

"There are a lot of reasons for supporting the church," Mr. Pervier said.
