Church condemns bid to take Christ out of calendar.

SCOTTISH church leaders last night condemned proposals to axe the term AD from the calendar, leaving out any reference to Christ's birth.

Whitehall mandarins are considering dumping the Latin phrase Anno Domini ANNO DOMINI, in the year of our Lord, abbreviated, A. D. The computation of time from the incarnation of our Saviour which is used as the date of all public deeds in the United States and Christian countries, on which account it is called the "vulgar vera."  - in the year of our Lord - for the politically correct politically correct Politically sensitive adjective Referring to language reflecting awareness and sensitivity to another person's physical, mental, cultural, or other disadvantages or deviations from a norm; a person is not mentally retarded, but  CE, meaning Common Era.

The Home Office has said the term might appear first on legal agreements with non-Christian countries or foreign companies.

One official said the plan was "very New Labour", while a spokesman for the Catholic Church in Scotland denounced it as "absolutely absurd".

Father Danny McLoughlin said: "I suppose next year we will have to count the years from when Prime Minister Blair came into office, as they do in some countries after a revolution.

"This year we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour. If the Government has missed that, it has a big problem."
