MEMBERS of a group aiming to save and restore a Midland church have revealed big successes after setting up an online forum for help.

Donations and prizes have come the way of the St John's Church Preservation Group after it set up a presence on Facebook in June.

The organisation is trying to get the church in Kates Hill Kates Hill is a residential area in Dudley, West Midlands, England.

Kates Hill was the scene of chaos in 1648 when parliamenterians used it as their base in the Civil War against King Charles I.
re-opened after it was closed by the Church of England Church of England: see England, Church of.  in 2002.

The Archdeacon of Dudley, the Ven Fred Trethewey, raised hopes for the future of the Grade Twolisted church last week, by agreeing to look at letting it be used again.

Almost 600 friends have signed up to the group's Facebook site, while another 260 have joined the Facebook page 'Save St John's Church, Kates Hill, Dudley' in just two weeks.

Deb Brownlee, chair of St John's Church Preservation Group, said: "We have watched in awe as people have located us on Facebook and joined. And they're not just passive friends - we received tombola prizes, they've attended at events and passed on ideas.

"We even received free advice from a computer company to help with our website."

The most impressive result came on Saturday when Facebook friend Emma Lorimer, who lives in Tividale, visited the Preservation Group's regular Dudley Market stall

and handed over a cheque for pounds 726. The former Virgin employee had been running a tuck shop at her place of work until she was made redundant.

Deb said: "This was the most amazing gesture by Emma and has pushed our appeal money raised to just over the first pounds 5,000."

Emma said: "I was aiming for the pounds 1,000 but unfortunately losing my job cut that short. I shall hope to set up another tuck shop or something else in my next job so that I can continue raising funds for the preservation group."

Tomorrow at 8pm, an event is being held at the Quality Hotel, formerly the Ward Arms, in Birmingham Road, Dudley, for the Facebook friends and supporters from another website, Black Country Gob, to meet in person. The meeting will be a chance to discuss more fundraising ideas to save St Joh n's.

The Preservation Group is seeking to raise pounds 16,000 for essential waterproofing works, pounds 15,000 for a feasibility study "A Feasibility Study" is an episode of the original The Outer Limits television show. It first aired on 13 April, 1964, during the first season. It was remade in 1997 as part of the revived The Outer Limits series with a minor title change.  and pounds 5,000 to replace the lightning conductor. It is expected to cost around pounds 200,000 to get the building fully re-opened and a further pounds 700,000 over ten to 20 years for total restoration.
