Your "Backlash Fever" story [At Issue, September 2] doesn't really explain the current struggle for power. Will our secular government take a stand as to who has the final say when interpreting the Scriptures? If Bush, Lieberman, and the pope get their way, it will be the government telling the Episcopalians and the Reform Jews that their same-sex marriages will not be recognized. Forget civil unions! This is a struggle for who has the final say in interpreting the Jewish and Christian Bible, with governmental backing. We should support our LGBT-friendly religious groups to validate their interpretations and not let Bush pass laws Pass laws in South Africa were designed to segregate the population and were one of the dominant features of the country's apartheid system. Introduced in South Africa in 1923, they were designed to regulate movement of black Africans into urban areas.  based on fundamentalist religious views. This is a clear violation of the separation of church and state

There's no question there's a backlash going on, and it's clear the hostility is going to get much worse very rapidly. What's tragic is that more than a few politicians are fueling the flames. What's tragic is that more than a few "religious" leaders are increasing their power and visibility by preaching the vilest hatred.

What's most tragic, though, is that despite recent polls and preachments, so few in the LGBT LGBT Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender  community see the juggernaut coming. Instead of wringing wring
