Chumps, not 'grumps' YourSay.I WRITE re: "We're no grumps, say Brum cabbies" (Birmingham Mail The Birmingham Mail is a tabloid newspaper based in Birmingham, UK but distributed around Birmingham, The Black Country, Solihull, Warwickshire and parts of Worcestershire and Staffordshire. , June 3). I cannot really say if they are grumpy grump·y adj. grump·i·er, grump·i·est Surly and peevish; cranky. grump i·ly adv. , but I can say most cabbies
are road hogs.
They speed to calls and come round from one road to a side road knowing full well these roads have cars parked either side of them. They expect every other driver to give way, they don't use indicators and they stop in the middle of the road waiting for fares. With shared space Shared space is a traffic engineering philosophy pioneered by the Dutch traffic engineer Hans Monderman. The approach relies on the principle that road users' behaviour is more likely to be affected by the street environment and design than by the traditional deployment of measures coming to Moseley village, when all the street furniture goes, I cannot see these taxi drivers giving way. They will be sounding their horns to clear the way. I have noticed one taxi firm where the drivers are courteous, read the road and wait. That is Star Cars - they are always polite.
