Chubb establishes subsidiary in Argentina.


WARREN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1995--Chubb Group of Insurance Companies announced today that it has established an insurance company in Buenos Aires Buenos Aires (bwā`nəs ī`rēz, âr`ēz, Span. bwā`nōs ī`rās), city and federal district (1991 pop. , Argentina, to serve Chubb's worldwide customers and develop a book of indigenous business in this growing economy.

"Argentina has one of the largest insurance markets in Latin America Latin America, the Spanish-speaking, Portuguese-speaking, and French-speaking countries (except Canada) of North America, South America, Central America, and the West Indies. ," said Gary Petrosino, senior vice president and manager of Chubb's Latin American Zone. "This open and competitive environment, coupled with the country's democratic government and the size and strength of its economy, present an ideal situation for Chubb to establish a subsidiary."

Chubb Argentina de Seguros S.A. is licensed to write all lines of property and casualty insurance, as well as group life and benefits. Herman G. Weiss has been named president. Weiss was previously a partner with Ayling Barrios Barrios is a name of Hispanic origin. The name may refer to: Persons

, the largest insurance brokerage firm in Argentina. Selina Memedova has been named underwriting manager. She was formerly employed in Buenos Aires by the Jardines Group.

"Our intention is to focus on the property/casualty and marine risks of mid-size and large companies, with a special concentration in the commercial and energy sectors," said Weiss. "Argentina has recently privatized its energy industry. And the mining industry, which has been dormant for 40 years, is now developing again. In addition to our experience as a leading underwriter of those risks worldwide, Chubb is also bringing to Argentina other sophisticated products-- such as directors and officers liability insurance-- as well as significant capital resources."

Chubb has been active in Latin America for more than 35 years. It has subsidiaries and affiliates in Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Mexico, Puerto Rico Puerto Rico (pwār`tō rē`kō), island (2005 est. pop. 3,917,000), 3,508 sq mi (9,086 sq km), West Indies, c.1,000 mi (1,610 km) SE of Miami, Fla.  and Venezuela. To support its expanding presence in the region, Chubb established a Latin American Zone Office in Miami in August 1993.
