Study Finds Electro-Pressure Device Treats All Types of Wounds,

Even Those Related to Aging and Not Responsive to Standard Therapy

Research that will be presented tomorrow at the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine's (A4M) 8th International Congress reports that chronic wounds treated with a new electro-pressure device healed quicker and more thoroughly than with standard treatment.

This technology, called the ElectroRegenesis Therapy Device (ERTD ERTD Energy, Resources, and Technology Division (Hawaii)

(Pacific Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m). , Calif.), appears to eliminate the factor of age in wound healing wound healing Physiology The repair of a wound Steps Inflammation, repair and closure, remodeling, final healing; repair of incisions may be either simple–'clean' wounds with little loss of tissue heal by 'primary intention', or 'dirty' wounds heal by  and regenerates necrotic tissue.

The study (titled "Preliminary Study to Evaluate the Effect of the ElectroRegenesis Therapy Device in Wound Healing as Related to Aging" and "Regeneration of Necrotic Tissue") was conducted by a team of researchers led by Bok Y.  wounds, were treated with the ERTD. The wounds were treated with a direct current (maximum of 4 milliamperes) of one polarity for 11 minutes and then with current of the opposite polarity for another 11 minutes.

Treatment was applied by conducting ultra-low electrical currents (in the milli to nano amp range) through special wraps applied near the lesions. The ERTD not only accelerated the rate of healing, but also appeared to negate the effect that a person's age can have on wound healing. Several patients achieved significant results after just one or two treatments.

"The ElectroRegenesis Therapy Device represents a major advancement for treating the most chronic, treatment-resistant wounds," said Lee. "The device is a safe, non-invasive therapy for a range of serious, difficult-to-treat health problems."

The incidence of chronic wounds and demand for innovative wound care products are expected to rise as the U.S. population continues to live longer. According to a December 2000 report issued by industry research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan, the market for new therapies in wound care management is expected to grow from $455 million in 1999 to $2.4 billion in 2006.

"Chronic wounds affect millions of Americans and are a particularly prevalent problem among the elderly," said Koonin. "The two presentations at the A4M Conference demonstrate that the ElectroRegenesis Therapy Device provides a pain-free, non-invasive treatment for the rapid healing of chronic skin wounds at all stages and for patients of all ages."

Evidence suggests that in addition to accelerating wound healing and stimulating regeneration of injured tissue, the device acts to reduce inflammation and enhance immune response. There are no associated contraindications, and the only observed side effect is an occasional slight rash around the treatment area.

A study involving 200 patients is currently underway at leading medical centers throughout the United States. The first FDA FDA
