The Waverly Consort

Sunday, Beall Hall

The Waverly Consort brings "The Christmas Story" to Beall Hall at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Part of the UO Chamber Music Series' 40th season, the program combines music, processions and gestures as it dramatizes the Biblical narrative as conveyed by music and illuminated miniatures of the Middle Ages.

Since its premiere at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1980, this seasonal offering has become a favorite throughout North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. . In the spirit and pageantry of the medieval church dramas and mystery plays, eight singers and five instrumentalists (playing reproductions of early instruments) recount the events of Christmas - the message of the archangel archangel, in religion
archangel (ärk`ānjəl), chief angel. They are four to seven in number. Sometimes specific functions are ascribed to them. The four best known in Christian tradition are Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel.
 Gabriel to the shepherds, the journey of the Magi to Bethlehem, the intrigue of Herod and his court, the flight into Egypt The flight into Egypt describes an event in the Gospel of Matthew (2:13-23), in which Joseph fled to Egypt with his wife Mary and Jesus, after the visit of the Magi.  - in a celebration of ritual drama and song.

Reserved seat tickets range from $16 to $36 through the Hult Center box office (682-5000) or the EMU ticket office (346-4363).

Collegium Musicum The Collegium Musicum was one of several types of musical societies that arose in German and German-Swiss cities and towns during the Reformation and thrived into the mid-18th century.  

Monday, Central Lutheran

The Collegium Musicum, directed by Eric Mentzel, will give a concert of unaccompanied un·ac·com·pa·nied

1. Going or acting without companions or a companion: unaccompanied children on a flight.

2. Music Performed or scored without accompaniment.
 vocal music from the 13th and 14th centuries at 8 p.m. at the Central Lutheran Church, 1857 Potter St.

Admission is free.

A set of 13th century motets from the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris will round out the program.

The Jazz Cafe

Monday, Room 178

The School of Music's Jazz Cafe presents an evening of jazz combos in a cabaret setting, beginning at 8 p.m. in Room 178 of the music school.

The program will include selections by Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis, Bill Marsh, Jeff Lovell, Dizzy Gillespie and Dave Swigart, including some arrangements for five guitars.

Tickets are $5 at the door. Refreshments will be on sale.

Eugene Contemporary Chamber Ensemble

Tuesday , Beall Hall

The Eugene Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, a group of student performers who are interested in bringing to life rarely heard repertoire from the 20th and 21st centuries, will present a concert at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall. Admission is free.

The program includes Darius Milhaud's "La Creation du Monde n. 1. The world; a globe as an ensign of royalty.

"; "Trapanese: Three Pieces for Sextet"; and the world premiere of "Chamber Symphony No. 1, Consternation" by UO graduate composer Jesse Jones.

The ensemble is conducted by Scott Ordway.

Dance Quarterly

Wednesday, Doughtery Dance Theatre

The UO Department of Dance presents Dance Quarterly, a program of works-in-progress by graduate and undergraduate dance majors.

The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Dougherty Dance Theatre, third floor of the Gerlinger Annex, 1484 University Street. Admission is free.

The University Symphony

Wednesday, Beall Hall

The University Symphony will perform Ottorino Respighi's "Ancient Airs and Dances, Suite III" and Luwig van Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5," one of the most popular compositions in all of European classical music.

The concert is at 8 p.m. in Beall Hall.

The Respighi suite, based on early lute lute, musical instrument that has a half-pear-shaped body, a fretted neck, and a variable number of strings, which are plucked with the fingers. The long lute, with its neck much longer than its body, seems to have been older than the short lute, existing very early  songs and pieces for baroque guitar, is arranged for strings only.

The University Symphony is directed by Wayne Bennett. Tickets are $7, $5 for students and senior citizens, at the door.
