Christmas moves down the road in Nicosia.

CHRISTMAS celebrations and decorations are moving down the street this year due to the works in progress at Eleftheria Square

Nicosia Mayor Eleni Mavrou Eleni Mavrou (Greek: Ελένη Μαύρου, Elénē Maýroy) is the mayor of Nicosia, Cyprus. She was elected in December 2006 becoming the first woman mayor of Cyprus's capital.  yesterday presented the programme of the Christmas events that will be held in the capital over the holiday season

Mavrou said that "the festive celebrations this year will be held on the Costanza Bastion in Ochi Square due to the works that are taking place in Eleftheria Square".

"Despite the 'geographical' changes we have made, I want to point out that the entertainment of our townspeople is our top priority," the Nicosia Mayor said.

Nicosia Municipality is organising a series of events across the city for the Christmas and New Year period.

"I would like to point out that the greater part of the lighting decorations will be carried out with LED lamps, with very low energy consumption," the Mayor said.

"The New Year party celebrations, traditionally held at the Eleftheria Square over the years, will move to Ochi Square and Constantinos Paleologos Street. A stage will be set up and a band with many singers will entertain the crowd as well as a DJ."
