Christine Dunphy, 1950-2008.

COLUMN: IN OUR OPINION

Our colleague Christine Dunphy, who died Saturday, faced her struggle against pancreatic cancer pancreatic cancer

She had a noteworthy career at the Telegram & Gazette. A graduate of Simmons College Simmons College may refer to:

Christine was named Gazette assistant city editor in 1983, later holding a variety of editorial positions, including assistant city editor of the merged Telegram & Gazette. She joined the paper's editorial board in December 1999.

Christine remained a reporter at heart, with a keen eye for a good news story and a passion for facts. She developed an enviable network of sources she could tap to eke out eke out

Christine was very much of the generation that quashed any lingering notion that a female journalist's destiny was writing for the women's pages - she opened doors in the halls of power formerly closed to women and boldly walked through.

Even after leaving the newsroom, Christine remained a valued mentor, and self-described "mother hen," to the generation of reporters that followed.

Her counsel, humor and generous spirit will be sorely missed.
