Her following is huge, and many of her fans waited excitedly for this book which is very different from her previous heavy and dark novels. In interviews with several reporters, Anne Rice says that she is a traditional Catholic, but she has decided that Jesus did not know his reason for being. Also, in one TV interview she said that she is sure that the Church should and will accept homosexuality homosexuality, a term created by 19th cent. theorists to describe a sexual and emotional interest in members of one's own sex. Today a person is often said to have a homosexual or a heterosexual orientation, a description intended to defuse some of the long-standing in future, as well as a married priesthood priesthood Office of a spiritual leader expert in the ceremonies of worship and the performance of religious rituals. The book, written in the first person, opens with seven-year-old Jesus playing with friends in Alexandria; two groups go against each other, and as a bigger boy, a bully, goes after him, Jesus feels power leaving him. The other boy falls to the ground, dead. Later, Jesus goes to the boy's house and brings him back to life again. Soon the child Jesus and his family--including his mother; his brother James; Joseph, whom he never called "father;" and several aunts, uncles, and cousins--go to Jerusalem, and home to Nazareth. Little by little, he begins to understand that he has been born of woman to die, but first, to be alive--and to learn. Reviewer's Note: I took this book with me on a pilgrimage pilgrimage Journey to a shrine or other sacred place undertaken to gain divine aid, as an act of thanksgiving or penance, or to demonstrate devotion. Medieval Christian pilgrims stayed at hospices set up specifically for pilgrims, and on their return trip they wore on their to the Holy Land, intending to read it as part of my spiritual journey, but before very long, I put it away in the back of my suitcase. It was so definitely a novel that came from an author's active imagination that I felt it would not help me to understand the real Child Jesus. I did finish the book after I came home, but only because I had to write this review. In spite of its description as fiction, this book could be misinterpreted as fact rather than fiction because of the compelling writing style and ability of the author.
