Originally published in 1960, Christ and Apollo: The Dimensions of Literary Imagination is a classic examination of the works of Greek dramatists, Dante, Shakespeare, Proust, Camus, Graham Greene, and other great writers in light of their gravitation toward two opposing tendencies. One aspect, symbolized by Apollo, is the tendency to desire escape from the finite real world and the human condition of embodiment. The other tendency is symbolized by Christ, and offers a glimpse of the infinite world.
