In the newly created position of Chief Operating Officer of Akamai, Mr. Schoettle will be responsible for product management, product marketing, engineering, network infrastructure and strategy, information services See Information Systems. , human resources, legal, and corporate services.

Mr. Schoettle will join the senior management team at Akamai that reports to Mr. Conrades and includes Paul Sagan, President; Earl Galleher, Executive Vice President; and Tim Weller, Chief Financial Officer.

He was responsible for the operation of the full-stream business including research and development, product management, marketing, and sales support, across five major locations in three countries. In previous assignments at Lucent, Mr. Schoettle was Vice President and General Manager of VoIP (Voice-over-IP) Access Networks, and Vice President of IP Communications, operating fast-growth and scalable businesses in the packet networking industry.

Prior to Lucent, Mr. Schoettle held a diverse set of positions across a wide range of technology and channel segments, with extensive global experience.

At AT&T Corp., Mr. Schoettle was General Manager of Next Generation IP Services, running product management and marketing for emerging Internet services on the WorldNet IP network. He also held the position of Director, Strategy and Market Planning for AT&T's telecommunications business services targeting multinational corporations.

At Novell, Inc., Mr. Schoettle held the positions of Senior Director of Corporate Business Development and Director of Enterprise Solutions, creating and executing new business opportunities for Novell's networking and directory technology and alternate channels.

With Unix System Laboratories Unix System Laboratories or USL was originally organized as part of Bell Labs in 1989. USL joined with the UNIX Software Operation, also a Bell Laboratories division, in 1990. It assumed responsibility for Unix development and licensing activities. , Mr. Schoettle spent three years in Europe as a Product Manager and then two years in Australia as Regional Manager, where he opened the first sales and marketing office in Australia and New Zealand.

Mr. Schoettle brings a strong technology background, holding B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from Emory University in Atlanta. Mr. Schoettle was selected as a Robert Jones Memorial Scholar from Emory University to attend the University of St. Andrews in Scotland on a post-graduate program in 1986. He also attended an Executive Education Program at the London Business School Around 800 degree students, from 70 countries, graduate from the school each year. Over 80 percent of students, and over 70 percent of faculty, come from outside the UK. A further 6,000 executives attend the school executive education programmes each year.  in 1998.
