Chorum Technologies' Optical Harmonic Equalizer and Dynamic Variable Attenuator Tapped by Fiberoptic Product News as Editor's Choice.

Business Editors

RICHARDSON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 2001

Two New Optical Products Extend Capabilities of WDM (1) (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) A technology that uses multiple lasers and transmits several wavelengths of light (lambdas) simultaneously over a single optical fiber.  Technology

Chorum Technologies Inc., a leading provider of all-optical processors and subsystems in the fast-growing fiber-optics market, today announced that its two newest products have been selected by Fiberoptics Product News as Editor's Choice products.

The two new PolarWave(R) products, the Optical Harmonic Equalizer (OHE OHE

), for advanced optical signal processing See DSP.  applications in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing See WDM.  (DWDM (Dense WDM) The term given to wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) when significantly more channels were being added. Since WDM is increasingly more "dense" all the time, both terms are used synonymously. See WDM.

Optical Harmonic Equalizer

The OHE utilizes the company's patented polarization processing and liquid crystal technologies to provide dynamic gain equalization In communications, techniques used to reduce distortion and compensate for signal loss (attenuation) over long distances.  for a new generation of optical networks. The OHE dynamically adjusts the broadband gain profile of optical amplifiers to ensure that the power levels of DWDM optical signals are equalized without requiring a conversion from optical-to-electrical-to-optical. The OHE enables more cost-effective, higher bandwidth and longer-reach optical networks.

Dynamic Variable Attenuator

Based on Chorum Technologies' polarization processing and liquid crystal technologies, the PolarWave DVA Array precisely and dynamically regulates the power of optical signals to maintain consistent high signal quality during optical transmission. Chorum Technologies' DVAs and DVA Arrays have no moving parts and therefore provide highly reliable and compact solution for power regulation and channel power equalization in a DWDM network. Chorum Technologies' DVAs have been qualified to Telcordia GR-1221 standards.

"Chorum Technologies has introduced two new products that enable a new generation of dynamic optical networks," said Scott Grout Grout

"As new networks and new optics technologies emerge, our customers now have a dynamic, high performance and cost-effective solution to help them realize substantially greater data rates and transmission distances in next-generation, ultra long-haul systems."

Chorum Technologies' OHE is part of the company's PolarModule(TM) line of optical subsystems, and the DVA is part of the company's PolarTune(TM) line of optical processors. Other product lines in the PolarWave family include PolarCast(TM) optical filters and PolarShift(TM) optical switches.
