Just like most professions, you will find some amazing trainers to work with and you will also find some less than par trainers. With some trainers charging well over 75 per session you need to make sure you are getting what you pay for. Here are a few tips to think about when hiring a personal trainer.

1. Educational Background

While it is not necessary to have a Bachelor's or Master Degree in Exercise Science to be a good trainer, it is something that helps. Trainers who have taken the time to study for 4 or more years in this field are showing a huge commitment to their profession. You want to find a trainer that is looking to make a career in the fitness industry. This means that they will stay up on the latest research on how to create exercise program that will get you to your goal quickly.

If your trainer does not have a degree it does not mean they aren't committed. There are other ways they can work on their education to be a great trainer. You should find out what type of certifications they have obtained. Some are much better than others. They should at least have a nationally recognized certification. The three biggest are the National Strength and Conditioning Association, the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and the American Council on Exercise. These are well known and accepted at any club or studio. There are some certifications that can be obtained online that cover the basics, but are not very difficult to pass.

2. Years Experience
Like most professions, the more years experience your have, the better you are at your job. This is very important with personal trainers. Every client a trainer sees is different and may have a variety of issues that must be evaluated. Many trainers are not experienced with working with a client that is diabetic, or had knee replacements, or has had back problems/surgeries, and so on. The more people a trainer works with the better they get at dealing with these special populations. If you can avoid it, you don't want to be the first in your situation that a trainer has dealt with.

3. Specializations

If a trainer has been working a while, they are likely to have taken a special interest in certain areas. Some trainers will research specific areas of fitness and work within that area. A few examples include sport specific trainer, posture improvements, prepost natal training, body building, fat loss, and elderly populations. If you have a very specific goal you will want to find a trainer that specializes in that area. They are going to be an expert in the field and the best person for you to work with.

4. Personality

Personality may not seem like a big issue, but one of the main responsibilities of a good trainer is to motivate. Chances are if you are going to a personal trainer for help, you probably dont enjoy exercising too much. If you have a trainer that keeps you motivated and more excited about your workout, then you are more willing to stick to the program. Some individuals like to be yelled at during their workout to push them harder. Others wouldnt appreciate this and need someone more laid back. This does not mean one is better than the other it just means some things work better for others. Be honest with yourself and know exactly what you want in a trainer. If they aren t excited to see you working out, how are you going to be energized for the workout

These are just a few tips to help you find the trainer that is the right fit for you. Hiring a personal trainer can be a life changing experience if you meet the right trainer. It can be an expensive investment, but well worth it to improve your health and your life. If you are not sure about a trainer, try him or her out. Most trainers will give a free session to make sure that you like the experience and will work well together. Just like any big investment, do your research before you jump into anything.
