Choosing a printer.

Q I'm thinking of purchasing a printer for my new home office, but I'm not sure if I should get a laser printer or an inkjet. Which do you suggest?

R. Taylor Red Oak, Iowa Red Oak is a city in Montgomery County, Iowa, United States, along the East Nishnabotna River. The population was 6,197 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Montgomery CountyGR6.

A Well, it depends. If you'll be using the printer for items such as memos and other small print jobs, an inkjet printer A printer that propels droplets of ink directly onto the medium. Today, almost all inkjet printers produce color. Low-end inkjets use three ink colors (cyan, magenta and yellow), but produce a composite black that is often muddy.  should suffice. If you're handling large print jobs or need to produce high-quality images that will go out to the public, then you should definitely opt for a laser printer. Inkjet printers are usually fine for everyday jobs and are a fraction of the cost of a laser printer. For example, there are numerous inkjet printers on the market that cost less than $100, while laser printers typically start at around $350. And color printers A printer that prints in color using three (CMY) or four (CMYK) colors of ink, toner or dye. Four color ribbons have been used in dot matrix printers, but these are rare today. See color laser printer and printer.  tend to cost more. But again, the difference is in the quality of the print and the output speed.

Remember also, that the price of a printer doesn't end with the hardware itself. You should also consider the costs of consumables--ink and paper--among others. Depending on how frequently you use the printer, that $99 inkjet could end up costing you more than a laser printer.

In the coming months, we'll look at printers, scanners, and other output devices, and examine the real costs to help you make the best tech decisions for your business.
