The Northwest-based vocal ensemble Cappella Romana will give a concert titled `The Fall of Constantinople' at 8 p.m. tonight in Beall Hall.

Cappella Romana explores the musical traditions of the Christian West and East, with an emphasis on early and contemporary music.

" is a program of Latin and Greek works reflecting the medieval twilight of the eastern Roman Empire.

Music to be performed includes Byzantine chants, Latin ceremonial motets and two haunting laments commemorating the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks The Ottoman Turks were the subdivision of the Ottoman Muslim Millet that dominated the ruling class of the Ottoman Empire. Founded in 1991, Cappella Romana tours regularly and made its European debut in 2004 at the Byzantine Festival in London.

Friday, Beall Hall

The School of Music will salute Eugene Symphony The Eugene Symphony is an American orchestra based in Eugene, Oregon. Its home venue is the Silva Concert Hall at the Hult Center for the Performing Arts.

Approximately 22,000 people attend Eugene Symphony's classical and pops concert performances each year.
 Orchestra's composer-in-residence Michael Daugherty with a program of his music at 8 p.m. Friday in Beall Concert Hall.

Saturday, Beall Hall

More than 100 young string players between the ages of 3 and 17 from the UO's Community Music Institute will give a spring concert titled `Violafest' at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Beall Hall.

Admission is free and the public is invited.

The musicians are part of the Suzuki Strings and Chamber Players program under the direction of Judy Weigert Bossuat, assisted by a dozen string teachers from the community and the music school's violin/viola pedagogy program.

The concert will include selections by J.S. Bach, Georg Telemann, Friedrich Seitz, Francois-Joseph Gossec, plus several folk songs and other special arrangements for young musicians.

UO Jazz Ensembles

Saturday, Beall Hall

The Oregon Jazz Ensemble and two Jazz Lab bands will present an evening of instrumental jazz at 8 p.m. Saturday in Beall Concert Hall.

Selections include `Bird Count' by Maria Schneider, `Inside Out' by Matt Harris, `A Little Minor Booze' by Willie Maiden, `Cottontail' by Duke Ellington and others.

Tickets are $5 ($3 for students and senior citizens) at the door.

Saxophonist Eric Barber

Monday, Music School Room 178

Seattle jazz saxophonist-composer Eric Barber will join members of the UO jazz faculty in a concert at 8 p.m. Monday in Room 178 of the music school.

Barber, a UO music school alumnus ALUMNUS, civil law. A child which one has nursed; a foster child. Dig. 40, 2, 14. , will join pianist Toby Koenigsberg, drummer Jason Palmer and bassist Tyler Abbott in a program featuring original compositions by Barber and Koenigsberg, as well as works by Thelonious Monk, Lennie Tristano, Kenny Wheeler and Keith Jarrett.

Barber has integrated influences from jazz, Balkan and Indian music.

Tickets are $9 ($5 for students and seniors) at the door.

Oregon Wind Ensemble

and Symphonic Band

Wednesday, Beall Hall

The UO's top two concert bands will share a performance at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Beall Concert Hall.

The Oregon Wind Ensemble, led by Robert Ponto, will perform Morton Gould's masterpiece, Symphony No. 4.

The UO Symphonic Band, led by Timothy Paul, will play `La Tregenda' by Giacomo Puccini; `Heroes, Lost and Fallen' by David Gillingham; `Ashokan Farewell' by Jay Ungar; `My Jesus! Oh, What Anguish' by J.S. Bach; and Profanation from `Jeremiah,'' Symphony No. 1 by Leonard Bernstein.

Tickets are $5 ($3 for students and seniors) at the door.
