Choir to tour Hong Kong; MUSIC.


CITY singers will be flying the flag in Hong Kong Hong Kong (hŏng kŏng), Mandarin Xianggang, special administrative region of China, formerly a British crown colony (2005 est. pop. 6,899,000), land area 422 sq mi (1,092 sq km), adjacent to Guangdong prov.  next month on a week-long musical tour of the province.

Amateur members of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra's adult chorus will perform with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (Traditional Chinese: 香港管弦樂團; Pinyin: Xiānggǎng Guǎnxián Yuètuán . The 120 unpaid singers will put their varied day jobs on hold - from students and teachers to surgeons, vicars and PR consultants.

Organisers expect the trip to confirm the orchestra's international standing, having already visited the USA, Australia and Canada.

Highlights of the tour include performing Mahler's Second Symphony with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Edo de Waart Edo de Waart (b. June 1, 1941) is a Dutch conductor of opera and symphony orchestras, particularly well-known as an orchestra builder havings elevated the status of a number of orchestras. , on Thursday, February 16.

And the next day the chorus and orchestra will be conducted by chorus director Simon Halsey in a programme including Faure's Requiem and Vaughan Williams' Five Mystical Songs.
